civil war vs. CIVIL WAR

I’m sick of the nattering nabobs of news nuance who populate the conservative controlled media. On and on they blusterate about whether or not Iraq is experiencing a civil war. Who cares! It’s a war and people are dying - both Iraqi and American, both civilian and soldier - and let’s not forget the forlorn souls of the Coalition of the Willing.

The entire Civil War vs. war vs. occupation vs. whatever gives me a pain in the tookus. It’s bad enough that infotainment journalists engage in endless blatheration and bomboosttheirratings, but why are so many people who should know better wasting their time and energy. Don’t they see the magic trick?

The Protest Primer: CULTURE JAMMING

Culture jamming
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protest

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_jamming

Culture jamming is the act of transforming existing mass media to produce negative commentary about itself, using the original medium's communication method. It is a form of public activism which is generally in opposition to commercialism, and the vectors of corporate image. The aim of culture jamming is to create a contrast between corporate image and the realities of the corporation. This is done symbolically, with the "detournement" of pop iconography.

Dems want to see citizen-monitoring database

Pentagon has been keeping tabs on groups perceived as security threat
By Lisa Myers
Senior investigative correspondent
Updated: 7:03 p.m. MT Nov 22, 2006

A year ago, an NBC News investigation revealed the existence of a secret Pentagon database that included information on antiwar protests and American peace activists.

Now, newly disclosed documents reveal new details on who was targeted and which other government agencies may have helped monitor Americans. At universities across the country, an antiwar group called Veterans for Peace has staged protests by setting up crosses for soldiers killed in Iraq. In New Mexico last year, the local paper described the event as a display of honor.

The Protest Primer: SAMIZDAT

Samizdat
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protest

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samizdat

Samizdat (Russian: самиздат, Polish: Bibuła or drugi obieg) was the clandestine copying and distribution of government-suppressed literature or other media in Soviet-bloc countries. Copies were made a few at a time, and those who received a copy would be expected to make more copies. This was often done by handwriting or typing. This grassroots practice to evade officially imposed censorship was fraught with danger as harsh punishments were meted out to people caught possessing or copying censored materials.

The Protest Primer: TEACH-IN

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protest

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teach-in

A Teach-in is a method of non violent protest, first employed against the U.S. government's involvement in Vietnam. The idea was inspired by a Professor Marshall Sahlins who taught anthropology at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. The idea was to allow a forum for opposition towards the war. Students and faculty would meet at night in university facilities to argue, ask questions, challenge assumptions and learn about the Vietnam war.

The Protest Primer: FLAG DESECRATION

Flag desecration
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_desecration

Flag desecration is a blanket term applied to various acts that intentionally deface or dishonor a flag, most often a national flag (though other flags may be defaced as well). Often, such action is intended to make a political point against a country or its policies. Some countries have laws forbidding methods of defacement (such as burning) or forbidding particular uses considered improper (such as use for commercial purposes); often such laws only apply to the country's own national flag. Other countries have laws protecting the right to burn a flag as free speech.

From the article Propaganda
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda

Propaganda is a specific type of message presentation directly aimed at influencing the opinions or behavior of people, rather than impartially providing information.

Techniques of propaganda generation

A number of techniques which are based on social psychological research are used to generate propaganda. Many of these same techniques can be found under logical fallacies, since propagandists use arguments that, while sometimes convincing, are not necessarily valid.

The Protest Primer: CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR

Conscientious objector
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protest

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscientious_objector

A conscientious objector (CO) is an individual following the religious, moral or ethical dictates of his or her conscience that are incompatible with being a combatant in military service, or being part of the armed forces as a combatant organization. In the first case, conscientious objectors may be willing to accept non-combatant roles during conscription or military service. In the second case, the objection is to any role within armed forces and results in complete rejection of conscription or military service and, in some countries, assignment to an alternative civilian service as a substitute for conscription or military service. Some conscientious objectors may consider themselves either pacifist or antimilitarist.

Anti-Agitprop: UNSTATED ASSUMPTION

Methods of Propaganda Generation: Unstated assumption
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unstated_assumption

Unstated assumption is a type of propaganda message which foregoes explicitly communicating the propaganda's purpose and instead states ideas derived from it. This technique is used when a propaganda's main idea lacks credibility, and thus when mentioned directly will result in the audience recognizing its fallacy and nullifying the propaganda.

The Protest Primer: TAX RESISTANCE

Tax resistance
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A tax resister resists or refuses payment of a tax because of opposition to the institution collecting the tax, or to some of that institution’s policies. Often tax resistance comes from pacifists, conscientious objectors or members of religious groups, such as the Quakers, who choose not to fund violent government activities. It has also been a technique used by nonviolent resistance movements, such as India’s campaign for independence led by Mahatma Gandhi.

Anti-Agitprop: TRANSFER

Techniques of Propaganda Generation: Transfer (propaganda)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Transfer is a technique used in propaganda and advertising. Also known as association, this is a technique of projecting positive or negative qualities (praise or blame) of a person, entity, object, or value (an individual, group, organization, nation, patriotism, etc.) to another in order to make the second more acceptable or to discredit it.

Anti-AgitProp: FALLACY OF THE SINGLE CAUSE

Techniques of Propaganda Generation: Fallacy of the single cause
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fallacy of the single cause, also known as joint effect or causal oversimplification, is a logical fallacy of causation that occurs when it is assumed that there is one, simple cause of an outcome when in reality it may have been caused by a number of only jointly sufficient causes.

The Protest Primer: OCCUPATION

Occupation (protest)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An occupation, as an act of protest, is the entry into and holding of a building, space or symbolic site. As such, occupations often combine some of the following elements: a challenge to ownership of the space involved, an effort to gain public attention, the practical use of the facilities occupied, and a redefinition of the occupied space. Occupations maybe conducted nonviolently or with varying degrees of physical force to obtain and defend the place occupied. Occupations may be brief or they may extend for weeks, months or years. In cases of long-term occupation, the phrase protest camp may be nearly indistinguishable, although occupation often connotes the use of space without permission or in defiance of governmental authority.

Anti-Agitprop: REDUCTIO AD HITLERUM

Techniques of Propaganda Generation: Reductio ad Hitlerum
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_Hitlerum

The term reductio ad Hitlerum (sometimes rendered reductio ad Hitlerem; whimsical Latin for "reduction to Hitler") was originally coined by University of Chicago professor and ethicist Leo Strauss. The phrase comes from the more well-known logical argument reductio ad absurdum. It is a variety of association fallacy and may also be described as argumentum ad nazium, though some distinguish the latter as referring to Nazi actions or beliefs with reductio ad Hitlerum being reserved for arguments involving Hitler himself. The relatively frequent occurrence of such absurd lines of reasoning in Usenet discussions led to the formulation of Godwin's Law in 1990.

Protest Primer: SIT-IN

Sit-in
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A sit-in or sit-down is a form of direct action that involves one or more persons nonviolently occupying an area for protest, often political, social, or economic change. Sit-ins were first employed by Mahatma Gandhi in Indian independence movement and were later expanded on by Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and others during the American Civil Rights Movement. In the 1960s students used this method of protest during the student movements such as the protests in Germany. The Young Lords in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, used it successfully a full week, to win community demands for low income housing investment, at the Mckormick Theological Seminary. In a sit-in, protesters usually seat themselves and remain seated until they are evicted, usually by force, or until their requests have been met. Sit-ins have been a highly successful form of protest because they cause disruption that draws attention to the protest and by proxy the protesters' cause. The forced removal of protesters and sometimes the answer of non-violence with violence often arouses sympathy from the public, increasing the chances of the demonstrators reaching their goal. Sit-ins usually occur indoors at businesses or government offices but they have also occurred in plazas, parks, and even streets.
