Is a Corporation a Person? Do Corporations Have More Rights Than People?

The Supreme Court has said, "Since the late 19th century, corporations have had the legal rights of persons guaranteed in the Constitution and Bill of Rights." By exercising the rights of persons, corporations have had a profound impact that undermines our democracy and affects all aspects of our lives, including every social and environmental justice issue.

This workshop will explore the history of corporate personhood in the U.S, its implications for our democratic system of governance, and introduce examples of a new movement of community rights-based actions to assert people’s rights over corporate rights. It will assist participants in developing community strategies for challenging corporate power and rule.

The seminar will be led by two outstanding activists in the field of corporate personhood:

Jan Edwards, as co-founder of the Redwood Coast Alliance for Democracy, organized the passing of the first resolution on Corporate Personhood in April 2000, at Point Arena, California where she lives. She also helped in passing similar resolutions in Arcata and Berkeley, California . With the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Jan toured the country speaking on Corporate Personhood. Her presentation includes the 18-foot Timeline of Personhood Rights and Powers, the Tapestry of the Commons, Legal Rights for Nature, and strategies for achieving Rights-Based Change in the community.

Nancy Price, is current Co-Chair of the Alliance for Democracy and also Western Coordinator of "Defending Water for Life" project of "Corporate Globalization/Positive Alternatives Campaign." She has focused on the rights of communities to oppose corporate control of local water services and resources and advocate for democratic trade agreements that respect the rights of communities and nature.
