NAACP Legal Defense Fund to hold
Annual Spring Luncheon & Conversation;
Solicitor General Elena Kagan will be the speaker

Washington, D.C., April 20, 2010 – The annual NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Spring Luncheon & Conversation will be held at the National Press Club on May 12, 2010, at noon.

Elena Kagan, Solicitor General of the United States, will be the featured speaker at the luncheon, which will also celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of LDF in 1940.

“Ms. Kagan has had an outstanding and exemplary career as a litigator, a scholar and an adviser to presidents, and we are honored to have her as our guest,” says John Payton, President and Director-Counsel of LDF.

“With this celebration of the anniversary of our founding, we can safely say that LDF continues to be the nation’s premier civil rights legal organization, leading black American’s quest to secure and defend their constitutional rights and to expand opportunity for all,” adds Mr. Payton.

Elena Kagan was confirmed as the 45th and the first woman Solicitor General of the United States in March 2009. Prior to her confirmation, she was the Charles Hamilton Houston Professor of Law and the 11th Dean of the Harvard Law School. From 1995 to 1999, Ms. Kagan served in the White House, first as Associate Counsel to the President and then as Deputy Assistant Director of the Domestic Policy Council. She was previously professor of law at the University of Chicago Law School. A summa cum laude graduate of Princeton in 1981, and a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School in 1986, she also attended Worcester College at Oxford University where she earned the M.Phil. degree. She clerked for Judge Abner Mikya of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and for Justice Thurgood Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court. She also worked as an associate for the Washington, D.C., law firm Williams & Connolly.

The National Press Club is located at 529 14th St., N.W, in Washington, D.C.
