On Tuesday, November 9, George Bush’s memoir Decision Points comes out in bookstores around the country. Taking a cue from a movement in Britain that called for people to subversively move Tony Blair’s recently published memoir, A Journey, to the Crime section of bookstores, Waging Nonviolence is asking that in honor of the release of the Bush memoir, people reshelve Decision Points to the part of the bookstore where it really belongs: Crime.

On August 28, conservative radio/television host Glenn Beck, 2012 Republican presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the National Rifle Association, and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation will conduct the “Restoring Honor” rally at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The date and location are significant. It was on August 28, 1963, on the steps of the memorial that Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington. Beck has billed the rally as a “non-political event” that will pay tribute to America’s service personnel and “help us restore the values that founded this great nation.”

A rare opportunity for direct civil disobedience in Arizona

Since the recent passage of Arizona Senate Bill 1070, scheduled to go into effect on July 29, those of us working for social justice in the United States have a rare opportunity to register a particularly effective form of protest. The inherently unjust nature of this legislation presents conscientious individuals with a real chance to go back to what many might say civil disobedience was originally intended to do: promote the repeal of an unjust law by openly and nonviolently breaking the law itself.

Arizonans: Get a Job and Fight Illegal Immigration at the Same Time

Gotta love this. Illegal immigration and unemployment are both above-the-fold policy issues currently being bantered about in American politics. Bringing them together in a clever campaign, United Farm Workers has created a program called Take Our Jobs, where undocumented immigrant farm workers will train "legal" American citizens to take their jobs in the farms and fields. This is a fitting solution, since these are the jobs that illegal workers "stole" from taxpaying Americans. See Ronald W. Mortensen, founder of the conservative, nativist organization Center for Immigration Studies (which the Southern Poverty Law Center has expressed serious concerns about) urging Tea Partiers to get more vocal on illegal immigration.
