Shutdown April 14What: Nationwide Shut-Down Day to Stop Police Killings of Unarmed People
When: Tuesday April 14
Where: Union Square 2:00 pm NYC, other cities

“On April 14, we're going to revive the spirit of Ferguson, that spirit of refusing to suffer the brutality of the system in silence. And we're going to TAKE IT HIGHER. We have to get back out into the streets to declare that we're not backing down, we're not going away,” said Carl Dix (watch video) of the Revolutionary Communist Party, a co-initiator with Dr. Cornel West of the Stop Mass Incarceration Network.

Dix, Dr. West and relatives of 30 unarmed people killed by police, including Juanita Young, Nicholas Heyward Sr., Gloria Leiva, Cephus “Uncle Bobby” Johnson, Dionne and Carey Smith will be joined for Tuesday's “national shut down day” by Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts III; musician Arturo O'Farrill (video); antiwar leader Cindy Sheehan (video); artists Eve Ensler, Jasmine Guy (video)Jasiri X (video) and a growing mass of people outraged by the latest video showing the police killing unarmed Walter Scott Saturday in South Carolina.

Watch a message of support from Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple.

The Stop Mass Incarceration Network calls on people to walk out of school and work on Tuesday April 14.

Cornel West (video): “For over seven years young Black and Brown women and men have been shot down by the police every 28 hours. We've got a Black president, Black attorney general, Black cabinet secretary of homeland security. Their fundamental aim is to ensure the citizens are secure and safe in America, but we haven't had one federal prosecution of a policeman for killing all of those folks. Something's wrong. Something's deeply wrong.”

Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts III, pastor of Abyssinian Baptist Church, NYC: "I am supporting mass protest on April 14. Shut It Down! We think pressure needs to stay on for justice in regards to the killing of Eric Garner, and of Black and Brown people all across the country. April 14 we will assemble on Union Square North at 2:00 pm. We want to make sure that we all are there. We want to see our congregations, our ministers and pastors around the city there on that day, and we will continue to press our case for justice."
