In mid-June, Bill and Helena spent a few days (very near Tahrir Square) in Cairo, where they talked with many leading participants in the events of the past six months. From Cairo they crossed by land through the Rafah crossing into, and later out of, Gaza. They spent three days in Gaza as guests of the Heinrich Böll Stiftung, meeting with rights activists, a range of female and male community leaders, and groups at a number of local think-tanks and institutions.
During the July 11 event, Helena and Bill will discuss their impressions from their visits to both countries. Helena will also briefly introduce her company's recent publication Food, Farming, and Freedom: Sowing the Arab Spring, by Rami Zurayk. Copies of this and other titles from Helena's publishing company will be available for purchase after the discussion, with 50% of the profits going to the peace and social action programs of Charlottesville Friends Meeting.
