Mumia Abu-Jamal's illness & mistreatment by PA authorities
by Debra Sweet Mumia has been in ill health for some time, not receiving adequate medical care in the central PA prison where he's been sent for life, after his death sentence was overturned in a decades-long legal battle. This week he was sent to the local ICU in diabetic shock, which occurred while he was in the prison infirmary. He's since been returned to the infirmary, where he had such bad treatment. Noelle Hanrahan of PrisonRadio.org reports that the prison authorities have made a new rule that he can't have a visit from family members more than once a week.
And from the performer Talib Kweli, of a visit earlier this week:
"Heidi Boghosian and I travelled to Frackville, PA to visit Mumia because we knew that he was not well. When we arrived we were told that he was hospitalized. We did a little reconnaissance and were able to get into the unit where he is being held, but were not let in to see him to see him. We were within 10 feet, spoke to his nurses, and delivered a note saying that we are here. Unclear that he will get it. Four uniformed guards are outside his room. Mumia has been sick for months. He landed in the hospital because he did not get the proper care. We were just asked to vacate the building. It’s time to mobilize to defend Mumia’s life."
Please call SCI Mahanoy, John Kerestes 570-773—2158 x 18102 and demand that Mumia receive proper medical care, and that his family and attorneys be allowed to visit.
Donations to insure he has medical care, and that the case is publicized, are being accepted here.
