Close Guantamo & Bagram - 10 years too many.

The 2,771 detainees still at Guantánamo and Bagram represent all that is wrong--morally and legally--with the “war of terror” the US loosed around the world after 9/11.  What began under the Bush regime has been more deeply institutionalized by the Obama administration. While the media has largely abandoned the issues, a bipartisan consensus is emerging to commit permanently to these horrific policies.

Our demands are:
•    the closure of Guantánamo by ending indefinite detention and military commissions;
•    the end of torture and impunity for torture;
•    the end of unlawful detention at Bagram and all US facilities;
•    the end of Islamophobia and discrimination;
•    and support  for all detainees either being charged and fairly tried, or released to countries that will respect their human rights.

New from Almerindo E. Ojeda (founding director of the University of California at Davis Center for the Study of Human Rights in the Americas and the principal investigator for its flagship Guantánamo Testimonials Project): disturbing revelations indicate that the three men found hanging in their cells at Guantánamo in 2006 - supposed suicides - were most likely "dryboarded" to death. In this "enhanced interrogation technique," socks were stuffed down people's throats, bringing those who survived to tell the tale close to death through suffocation. The war criminals who authorized all this continue to walk free, as the current administration acts to cover up these crimes while committing new ones.
