UN Report: Green Growth is Better, Safer Growth

By jimstaro - Posted on 21 February 2011

I just caught this a short while ago and just in time to stream most of the press conference, without even finishing my first pot of coffee.

Did some searching and found a couple of reports, more are being added as I type this, as well as the UNEP site page with the full report broken down in sections to download, read and study.

One doesn't need to believe in 'Climate Change', using the label 'global warming' in a simplistic way to feed the detraction of the obvious, detractors of advancing technologies and individual advancements and dreams have always been around. Developing, long over due and argued about, the technologies and finding the possible new means to the goals of a cleaner planet and cleaner living are just the same as any advancements man has made as we've evolved.

Greening should help bring about cleaner living. Greening should stop many of mans conflicts {think national securities and the continued growth of hatreds} on his fellow man, who will go to war to try and control anothers sun or wind,or what other possibilities can be found to cleaner energy needs through other advancing technologies and not with fossil fuels or anothers mineral assets.

Advancing to green economies brings growth, everywhere, as well as the needed trades and expertise to be able to carry out the advancement needs. Developing and growing towards cleaner living, cleaner manufacturing, cleaner air, cleaner water and much more, a cleaner and possibly less hostile planet.

‘Green Economy’ Needs $1.3 Trillion Investment Per Year, UN Says

Feb 21, 2011 - Nations can kick-start a “green economy” by redirecting $1.3 trillion a year from industries that overuse resources to 10 areas ranging from forestry to buildings, the United Nations Environment Program said.

The expense -- about 2 percent of economic output -- would help cut greenhouse gases and avoid price shocks associated with a dependence on fossil fuels and other commodities, UNEP said today in a report.

“Governments have a central role in changing laws and policies, and in investing public money in public wealth to make the transition possible,” said Pavan Sukhdev, a Deutsche Bank AG banker temporarily serving as head of UNEP’s green economy initiative. “By doing so, they can also unleash the trillions of dollars of private capital in favor of a green economy.” {continued}

Evidence mounts that green growth is better, safer growth

© WWF-Canon / Hartmut JUNGIUS: Investment in low carbon development can sustain ecomomic growth as well as and more securely than business as usual, UNEP has found

21 February 2011 - More and more evidence is accumulating that a clean and green economy is most likely to deliver a more secure, prosperous and less tumultuous future for humanity, WWF said yesterday.

WWF International Director General Jim Leape was commenting on today’s release of the major United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) report Towards a Green Economy which shows that appropriate policies and relatively modest redirections of global investment flows could grow the global economy at equivalent or greater levels than current forecasts.

The more and more sustainable economy that would result would also be less affected by scarcities and disruption than the existing, resource-depleting, high carbon “brown” economy, the report said. {continued}

UNEP's ground-breaking report: Towards a Green Economy: Pathways to Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication

The Report is compiled by UNEP’s Green Economy Initiative in collaboration with economists and experts worldwide. It demonstrates that the greening of economies is not generally a drag on growth but rather a new engine of growth; that it is a net generator of decent jobs, and that it is also a vital strategy for the elimination of persistent poverty. The report also seeks to motivate policy makers to create the enabling conditions for increased investments in a transition to a green economy. {Links to each section of report}
