Update on NYC Rally Against Resurgence of Japanese Militarism

By coleen rowley - Posted on 22 February 2013

The following is an update (to my earlier post here):

Press Release--Manhattan, New York, Midnight, February 20th, 2013 – The Alliance Against Resurgence of Japanese Militarism held a Rally on February 19, 2013 at 299 Park Avenue where Japanese Consulate General is located. A dozen speakers including NY State Assemblyman Charles Lavine and author of the book, A Plague upon Humanity:  The Secret Genocide of Axis Japan’s Germ Warfare Operation, Daniel Barenblatt,  as well as leaders of many Chinese American civil organizations spoke forcefully against Prime Minister Abe’s attempt to deny the existence of sex slavery (so-called comfort women) and other atrocities committed by Japan’s Imperial Army during WWII, to involve U.S. into her territorial dispute with China, and to revise Japanese Constitution with the intent to rearm the Japanese military into offensive forces. Several hundred people were at the rally. The U.S. government is urged to stop her complicity in siding with Japan leading Asia even the world into a dangerous path. Over dozen TV, newspaper and news agency were at the scene. Numerous reports in Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages appeared in yesterday’s news.

Coincident with this Rally, U.S. House Representative Honorable Michael M. Honda also commented on Prime Minister Abe’s visit. It is so eloquently stated, hence, we include its entirety to share with the media.

A Beautiful and Righteous Statement

By Congressman Michael M. Honda

17th District, Central County of Alameda, California

“While I congratulate Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on his recent election and look forward to his upcoming visit to the U.S.,

we cannot afford the time for revisions or retractions of past statements. Indeed, nothing is more important right now than for a democratic country like Japan to formally acknowledge and unequivocally apologize for its systematic atrocity.

Government is a living, breathing organism that is responsible for its past, present and future. As someone who was put into an internment camp as an infant during World War II, I know reconciliation through government actions, to admit error, are the only ones likely to be long lasting. In order to move toward a more peaceful, global world, Japan must accept responsibility and apologize. The grandmothers of those survivors of physical, sexual and psychological violence perpetuated by Japan Imperial Army are still waiting for an appropriate apology.”
