Whenever News Hits writes about U.S. Rep. John Conyers and his tireless efforts to raise hell over President George Bush's manifest misdeeds, we inevitably get a call or two berating us for not spending time talking about the Detroit Democrat's own foibles.
For instance, there were some holiday turkeys donated by a charity and intended for the poor back in 2004 that Conyers staff members, ahem, "lost." And it doesn't help that his wife Monica, a Detroit City Council member, isn't always a model of decorum. There's that bar brawl she was in, and her attempt to get a tunnel named in honor of her husband.
But, c'mon. How does misplacing a few gobblers stack up against, say, lying your nation into a bloody mess of a war and taking a shredder to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Which is exactly what our "commander in thief" has done. And it's John Conyers, more than anyone else in government, who is attempting to keep a righteous fire burning under Bush.
To that end Conyers, the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, has overseen the production of an exhaustive report that offers a comprehensive examination of the crimes Bush and his administration have committed. To quote from that report:
"In brief, we have found that there is substantial evidence the President, the Vice President and other high ranking members of the Bush administration misled Congress and the American people regarding the decision to go to war in Iraq; misstated and manipulated intelligence information regarding the justification for such a war; countenanced torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment in Iraq; permitted inappropriate retaliation against critics of their administration; and approved domestic surveillance that is both illegal and unconstitutional."
And the Republican-controlled Congress — you know, the same patriots who voted to impeach Bill Clinton for lying about a blow job — does absolutely nothing. Most Democrats are hardly any better, lacking the guts to even utter the "I" word.
So let's talk some real turkey: Conyers isn't perfect, but at a time when this country faces a constitutional crisis that threatens the very foundations of our democracy, he's one of the few in a position of power fighting with everything he has to hold the criminals running this country accountable.

He has compiled this amazing report that details the mountain of crimes of the Bush administration, yet still treats impeachment like some kind of deadly third rail, preferring instead to have meetings and hearings and investigations into whether or not there might be grounds for impeachment. It just makes no sense whatsoever.
Several states and hundreds of local municipalities have resolved that this president must be impeached. The majority of Americans feel the same way. If the dems take the Hill in November, and if their very first order of business is NOT articles of impeachment against the entire Bush cabal, Conyers'work is wasted and his credibility is shot.
Demand accountability.
