My IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH moment

Yesterday, being the 3rd Friday of the month, was Iraq moratorium. Of course, World Can't Wait has their wear ORANGE every Friday. I hope that all reading did something yesterday!

We went to stand in a very busy intersection during afternoon "drive time." Not just any intersection, this one is in a very heavily populated military area. To be fair, it is also a beachy, trendy, ecclectic area as well.

We got great response. Many truckers gave us the air horn which is alwasy exciting. I was very close to the edge of the road and purposely looked into the eyes of the drivers. The negative responses always get a laugh fROm us. "Get a job" to an elderly vet, idiot, to a College prof, "commie" to all of us. Fairly new to the repetoire is "Where's your burka?"

Many clearly military, in fatigues, honked, pumped fist, waved and cheered. One insisted that Saddam attacked the Trade Center. Toward the end of the vigil, a nice looking pair of soldiers were at the stop sign and began conversing with me. My sign was a two sided one that read

BUSH BETRAYED THE TROOPS
BRING THEM HOME

When the light changed, one of them said you're wrong you know. He didn't betray us, it was fun. Huge smile on his face made a shooting motion and said agin, "It was REALLY fun."

Go this weekend and see IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH.

"In the Valley of Elah" is a powerful film that every American, regardless of political persuasion, should see. It is based on a true story and is well acted, especially by Tommy Lee Jones, who plays the grieving father, who wonders if the military is covering up the death of his son, who has recently returned from Iraq. His discovery of what led to his son's death leads Jones' character to an inner journey, forcing him to examine his allegiance to a country that allows its troops to be placed unnecessarily and carelessly in harm's way.

No kidding that movie will open your eyes about what is happening to the soldiers that we send to Iraq.

I worked for a guy who was in Vietnam and flew the helecopters with the wounded. I was like wow that must have been awful...

he just smiled. It wasn't that bad. He was a highly functioning person. I think you either go numb to it or accept it as reality or you go crazy like so many homeless mental ill vets.

It is sad to do this to people who volunteered for no bloody reason than hubris.

Peace. I hope it comes soon.
