Bush lies should get him tossed out

By Dave Zweifel, The Capital Times, June 3, 2005

You may not have heard about the so-called "Downing Street memo" because the U.S. media haven't done much coverage of it.

The wire services with which The Capital Times contracts - the Washington Post/Los Angeles Times, Scripps Howard and the Associated Press - have moved few stories about the memo, which surfaced in the Sunday Times of London back on May 1. Consequently, we haven't had much about it either.

While the U.S. media have finally gotten around to lamenting the faked intelligence that the Bush people foisted on an unsuspecting public to grease the skids to go to war - something we wrote about nearly two years ago - the Downing Street memo is now flying under the radar screen.

Some contend that's because the American press is too chicken-livered to really take on the president, especially in view of the fact that some are claiming the memo is the smoking gun that ought to lead to George Bush's impeachment.

The memo, which was printed in full in the Sunday Times, was written by British national security aide Matthew Bycroft based on notes that he took during a July 2002 meeting - eight months before Bush started the war. The meeting included Prime Minister Tony Blair, a group of his advisers and Richard Dearlove, the head of Britain's intelligence service who had only a few days before met with Bush administration officials.

The memo quoted Dearlove saying that the Bush people wanted to remove Saddam militarily and that the intelligence and facts were being "fixed" to justify that.

"It seemed clear that Bush had made up his mind to take military action, even if the timing was not yet decided. But the case was thin, Saddam was not threatening his neighbors, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea and Iran," the memo said.

If nothing else, the memo lends credence to those who have contended all along that the Bush administration was never serious about trying to avert this war, that its mind was made up, and all that had to be done was convince the American people that it was justified. That's when they cooked up the phony stories about Saddam's nuclear and biological weapons capabilities.

Democrats in Congress have been trying to get the Republican majority to call for congressional hearings on the memo. They have so far been stonewalled with the White House contending that "it is just flat out wrong."

It is clear that an investigation ought to be conducted to determine just how accurate this memo is.

Frankly, if Bill Clinton needed to be impeached for lying about sex with an intern, George Bush ought to be tossed out of office for purposely lying to the American people.

In reply to Mr. Callahan... Republicans should step back and look at the forest and not the tree in front of their faces. The entire world knows that this war is based on lies; why is it that some Americans can't see the truth? There isn't enough space on this site to print all the horrible things this administration has done to Americans and others.... the war, environment, health care, education, unemployment. It's been said that patriotism is the last resort of a scoundrel and that is exactly what this administration used after 9-11 to go into a pre-emptive war with Iraq!

THIS IS JUST ANOTHER REHASH, OF THE SAME BUSH ADMINISTRATION PROPOGANDA.
IT DOES NOT MATTER AT ALL, WHO ELSE SAID WHAT!
BUSH DEMANDED THAT IRAQ DO THE IMPOSSIBLE, WHICH IS TO PROVE THAT SOMETHING DOES NOT EXIST!
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE, BECAUSE SIMPLY NOT FINDING IT, DOES NOT PROVE "NON-EXISTANCE".

HOWEVER, IT IS A LONG STANDING "AMERICAN TRADITION" THAT ANYONE & EVERYONE, IS "INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY"!!
SINCE PRESIDENT BUSH IS THE ACCUSER, AND SAID REPEATEDLY, "WE KNOW THAT SADDAM HAS WMDs"!!
SINCE DON RUMSFELD, SPEAKING FOR THE ADMINISTRATION, SAID, "NOT ONLY DO WE KNOW THAT SADDAM HAS WMDs, WE KNOW WHERE THEY ARE"!!
SINCE FOLLOWING THESE ACCUSATIONS THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION, INVADED A SOVEREIGN NATION, AT THE COST, SO FAR, OF 300 BILLION DOLLARS & THE LIVES OF OVER 1600 AMERICAN GIs.
IT IS NOW UP TO THE PRESIDENT, TO MEET A MUCH LOWER STANDARD THAN HE DEMANDED OF SADDAM.
WHILE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PROVE THAT SOMETHING DOES NOT EXIST.
IT IS VERY EASY TO PROVE THAT SOMETHING DOES EXIST.
THE WAY TO DO THAT OF COURSE IS TO PRODUCE IT!!

ARGUING THAT "EVERYONE KNEW SADDAM HAD WMDs" _ PROVES NOTHING AT ALL!!
NOT LONG AGO HISTORICALLY, EVERYONE KNEW, "THE WORLD WAS FLAT & THE SUN ORBITED THE EARTH"!!
EVERYONE KNEW THAT!!
EVERYONE WAS TOTALLY WRONG!!

THE ONLY QUESTION THAT MATTERS IS, DID THE WMDs EXIST AT THE TIME THAT BUSH SAID "WE KNEW SADDAM HAD THEM"?
SINCE RUMSFELD SAID, "WE KNOW WHERE THEY ARE"!!
THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION NEEDS TO PRODUCE THEM!!

If Bush lied please show me one link one any one person, country or organization saying Saddam did not have WMD before war. Not nukes but Gas and not 95% sure but 100% sure. I have been asking for 2 years and no one has provided one yet.

See list of 17 UN resolutions against Saddam http://www.whitehouse.gov/infocus/iraq/decade/sect2.html Notice 15 of them say

I'm utterly disgusted. I just attended a "town hall" meeting by Rep. Brad Sherman of the San Fernando Valley, California. Out of a scheduled hour and a half meeting, he spent the first hour in self-congratulatory speeches and photo ops with returning servicemembers, then our various state and local representatives (Assemblymember Cindy Montanez, L. A. City Councilman Dennis Zine, and County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky) got up to give short speeches on how well they were working with him.

Out of close to a hundred people who got "tickets" to ask questions, less than 20 actually got to ask them, and I've seldom seen such a display of dissembling and "it's all the Republicans' fault." Then he let drop the big bombshell. When one fellow got up to ask about the Downing Street Minutes (to much applause) and the letter by Rep. Conyers demanding the White House address the apparent issues mentioned therein he claimed not to have heard of it!, in spite of telling us he talks to Rep. Conyers 4-5 times a week! It should also be noted that someone had a table out in front of the meeting with flyers and posters about the minutes and demanding action. If he truly hasn't heard of it, he's in a bigger bubble than Dubya!

At the collective expressed disbelief of the audience, he noted that he gets 400-500 "dear colleague" letters a week, and just maybe hadn't seen it. I'm appalled. I'm disgusted. I'm disappointed and I'm furious.

He went on to talk about how powerless Democrats in Congress were, that there were no Democrats as chairs of committees or sub-committees, and that they couldn't call hearings or influence the Republican majority at all. In short, he came across as a gutless, clueless party hack who doesn't do anything for people without a lobby or photo op.
