Herb Hoffman, pala at maine.rr.com
National activist, and author, David Swanson will be speaking in Bangor on November 5 and in Portland on November 6.
David Swanson is co-founder of AfterDowningStreet.org, creator of ProsecuteBushCheney.org, the Washington Director of Democrats.com, and a board member of Progressive Democrats for America. He served as press secretary for Dennis Kucinich’s 2004 presidential campaign and has been a leading voice for the prosecution of Bush and Cheney for war crimes.
His new book Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union is an assessment of how Bush/Cheney fundamentally altered the way our government works, inflated the powers of the executive, and deteriorated the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Only through the active efforts of citizens, Swanson argues, can we restore our rights, and expand our conception of political rights to meet new challenges. Daybreak offers a shocking and inspirational breakdown of all that we have lost, and all that we have to gain.
Swanson will speak in two places on Bangor on November 5. At 12:30 pm he will speak at Memorial Union, University of Maine, Orono on the topic “Undoing the Imperial Presidency”. Then at 7:00 pm Swanson will speak at the Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine on “Forming a More Perfect Union: Rights We’ve Lost and Rights We’ve Never Had” at 170 Park St.
On November 6 Mainers will once again have the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to peace and justice, to an end to war, and to recreating a healthy nation. On that date an anti-war rally will be held on Monument Square, Portland at 5:00 pm and will feature David Swanson as keynote speaker and will also include Lisa Savage (Maine CodePink), Dud Hendrick (Veterans for Peace), and Bruce Gagnon (Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space). Music will be provided by Hannah Maris and Joan Fox.
The Rally is being co-sponsored by Veterans for Peace – Chapter #001, Maine Code Pink, Peace Action Maine, Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space, Waterville Area Bridges for Peace and Justice, and Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine.
Immediately following the conclusion of the November 6 rally in Portland, at 6:00 pm, David Swanson will go to the Longfellow Bookstore, just a few yards away, and will speak about his book and be available for a Q & A.
