Letter from a Nonviolent Resister

President George Bush committed a felony, punishable by five years in prison.
Authorizing the use of wiretaps without a court order on United States citizens,
as President Bush did in 2002 and 30 times thereafter, violated a federal law.
When this President ignored FISA, a special court that could issue a court order
within hours of a request, or could even be notified three days after NSA spying began,
he became a felon, and he has admitted it. The Act clearly states that FISA
"shall be the exclusive means by which electronic surveillance...and the
interception of domestic wire and oral communications may be conducted."

This President has a string of crimes to his name. He went to war against Iraq illegally.
He authorized the use of torture, by trying to redefine torture in spite of the Geneva
Conventions which the US has ratified and therefore made into US law. He has pillaged
the economy to benefit the rich, and neglected to protect the common citizen. Need I mention Katrina?
Or the new tax benefits for those who make over $1,000,000.00? Let's not even mention the
environment or our civil liberties. Some of these crimes trigger the Nuremburg Principles.

On Sept 26, Cindy Sheehan and 370 others, including myself, were arrested for trying to
implement the Nuremburg Principles. On Jan. 18, I will appear in court in Washington, DC
to defend my actions.

The Nuremburg Principles were ratified by the United States after World War II
and thus, made a part of the law of our land. These principles state, "Individuals have
international duties which transcend the national obligations of obedience...
therefore [individuals] have the duty to violate domestic laws to prevent crimes
against peace and humanity from occurring."

The law makes it a citizen duty to put an end to the illegal actions of George
Bush. Our nation is engaged in an illegal war, illegal wiretapping, and a morally
repugnant assault on the poor. President George Bush has turned the meaning
of Christianity on it's head. Christ's mandates clearly require his followers to engage
in nonviolent resistance to the brutal policies of the Bush administration. If we can bring
this war to an end even one day sooner, how many lives will be saved? How many soldiers
died today ... how many Iraqis? Not to mention the misery of the families and the wounded.

I invite all who stand on moral principle to join with me in nonviolent resistance
to Bush's immoral and illegal acts.

Sincerely,

Mary Francis
