Veterans For Peace Elects First Female President!
Retired U. S. Navy Commander to take the helm
Veterans For Peace, a non-profit educational organization, has elected Leah Bolger, a retired U.S. Navy commander to serve as its first female president in its 26-year history. VFP has over 5000 members organized into more than 125 chapters across the country and seeks to educate the public about the true costs and consequences of wars and militarism.
Bolger, who retired after 20 years of active duty service in 2000, received her commission from Officer Candidates' School in Newport, RI in 1980. Her service included four overseas tours including Iceland, Bermuda, Japan and Tunisia. She received her masters degree in National Security from the Naval War College in 1994, and was appointed as a military fellow at the Security Studies Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1997.
In 2006, Bolger formed a VFP chapter in Corvallis, Oregon, and served as its president for three years until she was elected to the national Board of Directors. She then served as the national vice-president until her recent election as president.
According to Bolger, "After more than ten years of illegal and immoral wars with Afghanistan and Iraq, and with the drumbeat for war on Iran growing louder by the day, there has never been a more important time for veterans to stand up and speak out about the truth of war and to oppose it in every way we can. Veterans can speak with the voice of experience about the futility of war and violence. War itself is not inevitable, but once started, the killing of innocent people is certain. I support the words of fellow VFP member, the late Howard Zinn in saying: "There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people." I am proud and honored to be the President of Veterans For Peace at this critical time, and it is my hope that VFP will some day succeed in its ultimate goal of abolishing war. I call on my fellow military brothers and sisters to join Veterans For Peace in our struggle against war and militarism."

Mortgage Settlement 'Whitewash': US Taxpayers Will Pay for Big Bank Settlement
Mortgage Deal or Not, Abusive Foreclosures Continue

EXCERPT:
UPDATE: (12:38 PM EST) Reports this morning in the Financial Times and elsewhere say that US taxpayers may be on the hook to bail out big banks -- again.
A report says U.S. taxpayers may end up on the losing side of the multi-billion-dollar housing settlement between banks and states. Former TARP Inspector General Neil Barofsky explains how we may be bailing out big banks again. "It was going to be punitive and make them pay for this remarkable misconduct that occurred. And now we're finding out that this so-called penalty is actually going to involve money flowing from the taxpayer into the banks. We're bailing them out again!" Neil Barofsky, the former special inspector-general of the TARP, said this morning that the recently approved mortgage deal between the nation's largest banks was "supposed to be a settlement for this remarkable fraud that the banks and the servicers have created across the country" is, in fact, a "political whitewash" because instead of the banks facing punitive action it "is actually going to involve money flowing from the taxpayer into the banks." And, straight to the point, he said, "We're bailing them out again!"
Barofsky, appearing on Marketplace radio this morning in an interview with Adrien Hill, said of the deal:
When asked what this revealed about the "true intent" of the mortgage settlement, Barofsky replied:
Did any of these NAZIS in Congress learn the lessons of Fascism???? 32 Senators want to carry out illegal aggression, War crimes

32 US Senators Agree: Attacking Iran Acceptable
Are hawks in Congress and compliant media pushing US closer to assault on Iran?
http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2012/02/17-2
excerpt:
"32 US Senators on Thursday signed a resolution that urges President Obama "to reaffirm the unacceptability of an Iran with nuclear-weapons capability" and affirms their opposition to "any policy that would rely on containment as an option in response to the Iranian nuclear threat." Though the resolution does not call for or recommend an attack on Iran, its tone and familiar tropes of a 'limited time-frame' on dealing with the 'Iranian threat,' speaks to the increasingly hawkish signals emanating from Washington's corridors of power.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., right, accompanied by Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, I-Conn., lead a bi-partisan group of senators in supporting President Obama's sanctions against Iran for pursuing nuclear weapons, Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite) "The lawmakers, led by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.)," according to a report in The Hill, "said they weren’t advocating an attack on Iran and wanted a diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue. But the measure [...] said containment was not a viable strategy, continued to promote the prospect that a military conflict could be on the horizon."
The Senate resolution was officially adopted amid renewed assertions from US officials that there is no proof that Iran actually has a functioning nuclear weapons program. The Hill reports:
