Cindy Sheehan's Speech in Dallas
The Veterans for Peace National Convention wraps up today at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas.
Thursday and Friday saw the vets check-in, and attend workshops that varied from Stan Goff’s ‘Gender & Militarism’ to ‘Speaking Truth to Power’ which featured Ann Wright, Coleen Rowley, and Jesselyn Radack.
Friday night featured keynote speakers and entertainers at Lynch Hall, on campus. They all had great things to say, and Cindy Sheehan was no exception.
Here is what she had to say:

Last year when you guys had your convention in Boston, my son had only been dead a few months, and we were really honored because the Santa Barbara chapter took my daughter’s poem A Nation Rocked to Sleep, (and they did it again this year), and I remember Michael Cervantes, he brought the booklet over to our house and showed it to us, and I never dreamed in a year I’d be standing here in front of you as one of the speakers at your convention, I never dreamed I’d be doing this at all, but isn’t it weird what life hands you…
I never heard about Veterans for until, I can tell you the exact day I heard about VFP, it was May 4th, 2004, and my son had been dead exactly a month, and I was watching CNN, and something came on, it was a report on Arlington West in Santa Barbara, and we lived about 6 hours north of Santa Barbara, and it was the May 4th before Mother’s Day, which was May 8th, and VFP was going to put it up on Sunday, every Sunday, so I called my husband and I said, “There’s only one place I want to be on Mother’s Day this year, I want to be at Santa Barbara. I want to go and see Arlington West.

Her son would like to know what he died for, and so would she. My entire close knit group of friends went to Iraq because they thought it was going to defend freedom, but evidently that was a complete lie and now they are dead.
Did you know they can not come back to life? What are you hiding Mr. President? America asked you for answers, so honor the dead and honor those who have gone on. Tell them what they have really died for.
Tell them all that they died in order for your second in command to get his oil. I not only dare you, I strongly ask you now!!!!!!!!!

Mr. President, they wanted you and the USA to become police for the entire world and take over as the world's only superpower. They did not care whatsoever about whether it was in God's interest, neither whether democracy was brought about or not. Their only concern has been to take over the entire world's economic policy, and have control of all of its resources to suit its interests.

I am with you in your pain. God bless you for being the voice in the wilderness. The press is controlled but they cannot totally ignore the fact they're losing viewers because they refuse to cover what is really important to our nation. You along with Congressman Conyers are taking the message to the the people of this nation. You are the voice that is telling us to wake up and take action.

Cindy, we've heard what you believe, but what did your son believe in? He was a 24 year old man who signed his life over to the military. Not only once, but didn't he re-enlist? What were his feelings on the war? I just got back myself last year and after seeing the good, yes good, that was done there, I fully support this war effort. I may go back in Jan. and if called, I have no problem going back. I respect your views on the war, but using your son as a pawn is sick. If you can prove he would of supported your anti-war efforts,then I take everything back.
She said if you believe in this war get your butt over there & take care of bussiness.What are you doing here if you think there is one shread of evidence that the Iraqi people have done any harm to America.If the war is so important to you why didn't you volunteer to extend in country.A really dedicated patriot would not have come home until every Iraqi is dead,because we know they were responsable for 9-11 and were going to send drones on ships off the Atlantic coast to unleash all those nasty WMD'S,which they didn't have,on us.Take it from a VietNam vet,CuChi-1965-66,all those civilians you will or have seen die are going to be a curse the rest of your days.I sincerely hope you will be able to justify your actions & wish you the best in the coming years.Just be advised,your president lied to you about every reason he gave to have his war.

I agree with most of what Cindy says about Iraq and W and I admire her bravery and tenacity. However, what does she mean by:

I don't know what this means LITERALLY. But it also suggests Cindy doesn't know much about the history of the region. She should probably stick to domestic politics IMHO.
Stop the lies and the killing now. We have killed far more innocnet Iraqi women and children than were killed by terrorists on September 11. For every innocent person we kill we are creating generations of terrorist, vowing to keep killing Americans-who attacked their country for ABSOLUTLEY NO REASON. Meanwhile US workers suffer with rising oil prices and jobs sent overseas. I sometimes feel like this is all a nightmare-I truly dont recognize this county i love so much. Bush is the worse preisdent in our country's history.
