Impeachment at the Rose Parade

By Barbara Cummings

We left San Diego at 1:30 AM and got to Pasadena at around 4 AM. The metro runs all night long so that was easy enough to find our way to the parade venue. We were told to look for ORANGE. At first we were so excited because there was ORANGE everywhere! After being rebuffed by the first group I approached, we understood that one of the teams playing in the Bowl was orange so it would not be so easy to find others. Wrong again. People were very helpful and mostly positive in these predawn, cold hours.

When they saw ARREST BUSH and IMPEACH they were only too happy to direct us to the area where others had camped out all night long. The IMPEACH group was much smaller than we had hoped but that did not dampen their spirits. Ours either! We each got a sign and began walking the streets. It was too cold to be still. As the sun came up, the crowds kept getting bigger, constant traffic past where we stood. We were directly across form the press area. For an hour or so we were photographed continuously. I decided then to break out the www.afterdowningstreet banner and display it while we had the chance. Some of the remarks we have all heard but on this day they seemed downright comical.

COMMIES, no that would be our biggest trading partners.

GET A JOB, hello! it's a holiday.

LOSER, not really, I'm retired and doing okay.

YOU LOVE HILARY? um, no, in fact I don't know anyone who does.

So it went until they closed the street. By then the crowd was so big that we had nowhere to go but scuttle off to a side street. We were heartened to see that IMPEACH signs were everywhere and what a cheer for the CHAIN GANG! We passed the next 2 hours walking and talking and getting our photos taken. When the parade ended, we fell in behind the Jesus crowd which had some how gotten to the head of the line first. The CHAIN GANG was great and the giant CONSTITUTION incredible. The speeches by Cindy Sheehan, and others were short and to the point of why we had all come so far today. IMPEACHMENT, RESTORE THE CONSTITUTION, JUSTICE FOR AMERICA.

There were no refuse cans or receptacles anywhere so the whole parade route was trashed! We know why there were no trash cans in the whole city of Pasadena, don't we? Better to trash the city than take a chance on SOMETHING SCARY ending up in a dark trash can that no one can see. It sure made it easier for the recyclers as their treasure was right there on the sidewalk and in the street for the taking, like gold nuggets in the sand.

We had been on our feet for 9 hours by this time. We stopped for lunch and made it back to the metro for the drive home. The news reports we listened to seemed to go out of the way to suggest no one or nothing disrupted the Rose Parade. Don't believe it, we were there, maybe 4oo of us, standing quietly, being seen, generating conversation and maybe even a bit of conscieince for some.

We are so proud of you for standing up for our Constitution. This new year should be a new beginning for all of us to stand for peace and accountability.

All they did was inject politics into what should have been a non-partisan fun day. Thanks for ruining the day.

Did you hear or see anything about the "Shame" protest against the Chinese float? Just wondering.

Of all places that one would hear the: "Commies, get a job, loser, you love Hillary" remarks, California is the LAST place that I thought one would have it. I lived there for a little while in the San Diego area while Raygun was President, so I know California is a complex place , politically speaking. But to hear such ignorant remarks from Californians, what's up with that ?!

Hello, All:

It was great to see Cindy and the others fighting the fight for all of us. It may not be too long now before people like Cindy Sheehan will be taken off the street and silenced. Everyday that the Bush Administration stays in power the weaker we become. Don't be fooled by poll numbers. They have no effect on this man or his staff. These people had an agenda when they came to power. The founding fathers knew better that to let one man have as much power as George Bush has taken unto himself with the aid of an impotent congress. Now this congress stands ready to give this rogue president even more power. (The Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 (S. 1959) has already past the house with almost no opposition. This bill will give the government the power to study and define what terrorism is and what actions may lead to "homegrown terrorism". The bill is so vaguely worded that it could and will be used to stifle any and all dissent. Anytime one of us opposes the countries march toward fascism our dissent will be called treason and our demonstrations will be called terrorism. It will be said that we are “sowing the seed of terrorism in our town and communities. We could labeled an “enemy combatant” at the caprice of George w. Bush and held indefinitely.

Naomi Wolf has written an enlightening book titled "The End of America" In the book she reminds the reader how dynamic and revolutionary the ideals put forth in the Constitution were in the day they were written and how timeless they are today. She points out the wisdom and forethought the founding fathers built into the document that would make it possible for us (their descendants) to deal with crises that would most certainly arise. She also takes time to show how fragile democracy really is and the vigilance and action needed to preserve it and prevent the erosion of liberty. That is what Cindy and others are doing everyday with all their heart but she needs our help. Without a massive unified movement that will either have to be listened to or suppressed more of our rights will be taken away. Any new legislation to come out of Washington is bound to make opposition more difficult if not dangerous.

If Cindy, Dennis Kucinich and others are not successful there is coming a time when we will have to choose either the mortal sin of compliance or to fight and risk detention and death. Support them now. Impeachment is the first step to taking our country back. We cannot wait till the elections. We must act now!

Barbara, PDLA; et al i'm very thankful that you made the effort to tell the rest of America - all is not well. This parade within a parade doesn't happen if all is peachy keen.
As for the western phenomina of 'frat boy's barking = it'd rekon that the Hollywood B:)lvd crowd is NOT the Colorado Blvd crowd
