Muslim Arrested Over Head Scarf In Courtroom

Muslim Arrested Over Head Scarf In Courtroom | WSBTV.com

A head scarf landed a Muslim woman in jail Tuesday after she refused to remove it during a hearing at the Douglasville Municipal Court.

Lisa Valentine, also known by her Islamic name, Miedah, 40, was arrested for 'violating a court policy of no headgear', Chris Womack, deputy chief of operations for the Douglasville Police Department said on Wednesday.

Valentine was in court with a nephew who was facing a traffic citation. She was wearing a hijab, the head covering worn by Muslim women.

When she refused to remove it she was handcuffed and taken to Judge Keith Rollins' chambers. He cited her for contempt and ordered her held in jail for 10 days.

Omar Hall, Valentine's husband, said she had been released late Tuesday.

"I can't believe someone would do this in America," Hall said, adding the couple plans to file a lawsuit.

Many Muslim women cover their heads, following an Islamic custom. The practice has created conflict and headlines in courtrooms and schools across the country.

decorum over liberty and personal freedoms in Amerika, 2008.

Oh, by the way, exactly WHEN was one of the foundations of the Constitution--the "Freedom of Religion"--removed?! GEEZUS DOES NOT RUN THIS FUCKING COUNTRY!!!

REAL "CHANGE"? http://www.dsausa.org/about/index.html

Unbelievable, Congress shall make no law regarding the establishment of religion or the free excercise thereof. First, she did not go in the court room, she was stopped at a checkpoint and told she could not go in. As she walked away, the bailiff didn't like her comment and arrested her. Second, as a Christian, I believe that everyone has to be allowed to practice any religion in the manner they believe, or I cannot expect to be allowed to practice mine. I cannot imagine that they have ever told a nun to take off her habit, and yet that is far less significant to their religion than the hajib is to the muslim. She was not a prisoner and under their control, she was not disguising herself or even coming before the court, she was with a relative who was going to court on a minor traffic violation. Why do we have to try and embarass ,degrade and make someone knuckle under for no reason. No clear and present danger, except from a court who thinks they can enforce a rule like this. And just as a sideligtht to the guuteral comments made ahead of this, I hate to bring any education into your life, but Jesus is a significant prophet in the Muslim religion as well.

>cannot imagine that they have ever told a nun to take off her habit

The moment I read this article, I had the same reaction, although most nuns don't wear the headgear or habit anymore.
