Impeachment investigation ahead for Bush and Cheney?
by Martha R Gore | Examiner.com
It came as no surprise that House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers began talking about impeachement hearing against President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney on January 14, 2009. If such hearings come about, according to Conyers, it would be a means of reaffirming constitutional principals.
Many Bush critics think that Conyers put off an impeachment battle during the last two years because of concerns that it might have political repercussions that might have kept the Democrats from winning the larger congressional majorities and the presidency during the 2008 elections.
In a forward to a 487-page report entitled, "Reining in the Imperial Presidency, Conyers quotes Richard Nixon's famous rationalization of presidential misdeeds, "When the President does it, that means it is not illegal." He maintains that this has been the Bush Administration approach to power.
The report which was released on January 13, 2009 documents what Conyers cited as Bush's excessive claims of executive power and illegal acts. It calls for a blue-ribbon commission and independent criminal probes. According to Conyers, the stated goal of the investigation is "to restore the traditional checks and balances of our constitutional system...." It would cover allegations of torture, "extraordinary rendition", warrentless domestic surveillance, leaking the CIA identity of Valeria Plame Wilson, and the firing of nine U.S. Attorneys.
There is no evidence so far that Obama will recommend that his Justice Department launch a criminal probe of Bush's administration past practices. However, politics make strange bedfellows and he might yet be convinced by Conyers and circumstances.

Conyers hemming and hawing writing reports telling everyone else what they should be doing and Pelosi taking impeachment off the table for Bushco, no bones about it, have established a dangerous new standard for immediate impeachment proceedings. Serious high crimes and misdemeanors, like those 39 Articles introduced by Rep Dennis Kucinich, are now no longer impeachable offenses for the democrats, but lying about a sexual indiscretion outside of marriage does warrant immediate impeachment proceedings in the House and a quick trial in the senate for the Republicans. This dereliction of duties duo have betrayed their duties by their silence and have set a new precedent not envisioned by the founders as President Obama begins his new administration-anything goes for the Democrats, but lying about marriage infidelities will result in Republicans demanding and pursuing immediate impeachment proceedings.
We need a 3rd party now. Infiltrate Progressive Democrats of America to form a base for a 3rd party. Register as Greens so we can take over the Green Party from Cynthia McKinney's army of wackos.
but no thanks. Anyone that uses the term wackos for an entire group of people isn't someone I'd get along with. At all. It makes me think you tend to group people and that's a foolish premise. There's a certain group of Republicans I like. The Ron Paul Army. EVERYBODY calls them wacko because of a few of the zealous among them, but overall, they're just like anyone else. Human. And I don't think I've ever heard one talk bad about any other group. Regardless of what your political leanings, there's an important lesson there... I know whites that are assholes, but all whites aren't assholes. etc. etc.
The leadership of the Democratic Party refused to impeach and end the war so that they could get a political advantage in the next election. The cost of this delay can be counted in thousands of lives lost and hundreds of billions of dollars squandered. All this was deliberately done to gain political advantage and power. How does this in any way make them better than Republicans? This is why I did not vote! A pox on both you houses!
Always trying to "look good," while essentially doing nothing.
Both Conyers and Pelosi removed the only leverage we had over a criminal administration and, in so doing, the same as gave that criminal administration, BushCo, the green light for whatever they wished to pursue -- that should be very apparent from the last two and more years. That leverage removed for political expedience, as death, destruction and economic devastation ensued all around them? Now, Conyers speaks of investigations? I'm sorry, I'm completely out of faith! What I see is, yet, another effort to stall and prolong any procedures having to do with accountability. The 9/11 Commission investigations went on for how long? And when were WE informed as to their findings? And were their findings ultimately paid attention to? And weren't their findings also full of fault?
Forget it. We need to have the Attorney-General, Eric Holder, Appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate the war crimes of Bush, et al. Please, if you have not already done so, click on and sign the Badge and give your voice to the need for a Special Prosecutor.
Also, copy the Badge (Get Badge), paste it in an e-mail and circulate it to your family, friends, and acquaintenances -- everyone you can think of. The issue of accountability is the first step toward RETURN TO THE RULE OF LAW.
The mentality that I have encounter in this article is one in which would lead to the destruction of the United States of America. We live in an age where 1 nuclear weapon which can easily be smuggled into New York could wipe New york off the map. Any responsible President would seek all means to prevent such an event including President elect Obama. The people who run this organization do not have the responsibility a president has. He is the one after careful counsel that has to make decisions based on the intelligence he has. You and I can criticize all day long because we don't have to worry about being responsible for the way we would have things done. There has not been another terrorist attack on America since 911. We have President Bush to thank for that.
But another attack will come far worse than 911. When it happens maybe then you will wake up and see that the Chief and Commander of the United States Armed forces must do what ever it takes to defend and protect our way of life. Because that is exactly what is at stake!!
