No moment of silence for Ill. students | UPI.com
A federal judge in Illinois ruled a state law requiring students to observe a moment of silence is unconstitutional.
U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman overturned the law Wednesday, saying the required moment of silence was an unconstitutional endorsement of religion designed to introduce prayer in public schools, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.
Gettleman put a temporary ban on the law in May after Buffalo Grove High School student Dawn Sherman and her father, atheist activist Rob Sherman, filed a legal challenge.
"This has just brought closure for everyone, for all the districts in the state of Illinois," said Venetia Miles, spokeswoman for Township High School District 214 in Arlington Heights.

Well, this seems kinda stupid. A moment of silence is not a prayer. Any yet people are offended by it?
A moment of silence isn't necessarily prayer; it has been used as a sign of respect for many persons and causes. The religious crap of the bush years makes people overly sensitive. I think we have more important issues upon which to concentrate our energies. Maybe I am wrong, but one momemnt of silence can't truly hurt anyone.

that could be bad...
A mandatory moment of silence is "ok, let's play make believe". I went through those stages in gradeschool with mandatory prayer.

First it's a moment then it's fifteen minutes, then Haggert's got his hands all over your pantyloons (back when he liked girls). Nope, don't even open the door a crack (thank you silly willy for the funny :) That's a Pandora's Box and as they say "you give em an inch, they take a mile". I suggest you watch "Religulous" by Bill Maher to see just how insane institutionalized religion can be (in an interview, Bill even said "I like Barack, and I seriously hope he's lying about being religious"). How many maniacs in world history does it take for people to learn this??? A long spell back, when Junior puffed out his bird breast and chortled "this is the New Crusade", a cold chill went down me. I thought "oh no, you di--int!". This stupid, cometojesuswhenIpassedoutjogging, zealot wanted (did) to pick up a thousand year old conflict and dust it off. I guess he's still grudging on the fact that Saladin kicked some major infidel ass a ways back and "we gots to git us sum a-rabs". The Founding Fathers knew the supreme wisdom of separation of Church and State. Of all of Thomas Jefferson's prized possessions, a bust of Voltaire was his favorite. One particular quote comes to mind from Voltaire-"men will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest". Need I say more... ?
