Pope Benedict XVI has lifted the excommunications of four traditionalist bishops, including that of a Holocaust denier whose rehabilitation sparked outrage among Jewish groups.
The four bishops were excommunicated 20 years ago after they were consecrated by the late ultraconservative Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre without papal consent - a move the Vatican said at the time was an act of schism.
The Vatican said Saturday that Benedict rehabilitated the four as part of his efforts to bring Lefebvre's Society of St. Pius X back into the Vatican's fold.
But the move came just days after one of the four, British Bishop Richard Williamson, was shown in a Swedish state TV interview saying that historical evidence "is hugely against 6 million Jews having been deliberately gassed."
Jewish groups denounced the Vatican for having embraced a Holocaust denier and warned that the pope's decision would have serious implications for Catholic-Jewish relations as well as the pontiff's planned visit to the Holy Land later this year.
"I do not see how business can proceed as usual," said Rabbi David Rosen, Jerusalem-based head of interrelgious affairs at the American Jewish Committee and a key Vatican-Jewish negotiator.
He called for the pope or a senior adviser to issue a "clear condemnation" of all Holocaust denials and deniers.
Shimon Samuels of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Paris said he understood the German-born pope's desire for Christian unity, but said Benedict could have excluded Williamson. He warned that his rehabilitation will have a "political cost" for the Vatican.
"I'm certain as a man who has known the Nazi regime in his own flesh, he understands you have to be very careful and very selective," Samuels said.
The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Williamson's views were "absolutely indefensible." But he denied that rehabilitating Williamson implied that the Vatican shared them.
"They are his personal ideas ... that we certainly don't share but they have nothing to do with the issue of the excommunication and the removal of the excommunication," Lombardi told AP Television News.
Williamson's comments cast a cloud over the pope's efforts to normalize relations with the Swiss-based Society of St. Pius X, which Lefebvre founded in 1969. Lefebvre was opposed to the liberalizing reforms of the 1962-65 Second Vatican Council, particularly its ecumenical outreach and its decision to allow Mass to be celebrated in local languages instead of Latin.
Despite concerns from liberal Catholics, Benedict has made clear from the start of his pontificate that he wanted to reintegrate the group back into the Vatican's fold, meeting within months of his election with the current head of the society, Bishop Bernard Fellay.
In 2007, Benedict answered one of Fellay's key demands by relaxing restrictions on celebrating the Latin Mass. In lifting the excommunication decree, he answered the society's second condition for beginning theological discussions about normalizing relations.
The decree from the Vatican's Congregation for Bishops said Benedict "remits" the automatic excommunication that the four bishops incurred and said the 1988 decree declaring their consecrations a schismatic act had no legal standing any longer.
In a statement Saturday, Fellay, who is one of the rehabilitated bishops, expressed his gratitude to Benedict and said the decree would help the whole Roman Catholic Church.
"Thanks to this gesture, Catholics attached to tradition throughout the world will no longer be unjustly stigmatized and condemned for having kept the faith of their fathers," Fellay said in a letter to his supporters.
Fellay, meanwhile, has distanced the society from Williamson's remarks about the Holocaust, saying Williamson only had authority to discuss matters of faith and that he was personally responsible for his own opinions.
But Fellay also berated Swedish state television, accusing it in a Jan. 21 letter of having introduced the Holocaust issue in the interview "with the obvious intention of misrepresenting and maligning," the society.
While Williamson's comments may be offensive and erroneous, they are not an excommunicable offense, said Monsignor Robert Wister, professor of church history at Immaculate Conception School of Theology at Seton Hall University in New Jersey.
"To deny the Holocaust is not a heresy even though it is a lie," he said. "The excommunication can be lifted because he is not a heretic, but he remains a liar."
The Society of St. Pius X, which is based in Menzingen, Switzerland, has six seminaries, three universities and 70 primary and secondary schools around the globe. Aside from the four bishops, it boasts 463 priests and 160 seminarians.
The status of the society's priests remains unsettled. While their ordinations are valid, the Church considers them "illicit" because they were ordained by someone who didn't have the authority, Lombardi said. Pope Paul VI suspended Lefebvre from priestly duties in 1976, but he continued ordaining priests illicitly.

Zionist global media has commandeered all MSM/political discussions on the subject of academic investigations of the "on the ground" full truth about the holocaust. Ahmadinejad correctly stated at his Columbia speech that inquiry and research concerning the truth about any and all historic phenomena is not considered "off limits", but when it comes to researching the holocaust it is considered "Holocaust Denial"... why is that?
The academic debate is not whether there was in fact mass slaughters and a holocaust, but how many really were killed and what was the participation of high-level Jews in the Nazi conspiracy against Germany and the world.

I think you're asking a question here of somebody else. I never have once proposed that a holocaust never happened. Never the less, having worked and lived in Germany, I can tell you why it is against the law there: It is more in the public interest to squelch free speech on this subject than to tempt any reemergence of any Fascist or Nazi social movement. It is a price Germans willingly pay in penance for their people's past deeds.
Do you realize the German people commonly recognize this law as an obvious violation of the principle of free speech?

What posts/comments are you reading? I never referred to a "mistake". Maybe you're not literate enough or too impatient to read what I wrote. Any academic inquiry on the details of the holocaust that occurred in Germany from about 1932 'til the end of the the war cannot be confused with "denial" unless you are trying to make others "deniers". Is that what you are trying to do?

Arguing about how many people were killed in the Holocaust and how is different from denying it altogether. I know that the Zionist movement has used the Holocaust to their "advantage." There is no question about that. By the way, how many kids did the Israelis kill in Gaza during the latest attack?

I apoligize for not being clear. My intention was to point out a concern that the masses do not understand the complexities of death tolls over denials. I also do not trust the agenda of ratzinger and williamson. To answer your question about the Israeli government war crimes you are correct. And I cant argue with your statement about questioning the details of history. I did not express myself well but was just trying to make the point that this story and these people,ratzinger,williamson,could be putting out info intentionally or not that would make people think that the people who question the clear cover up the US government is engaged in reguarding sept 11 are driven by somthing other than a desire for the truth chris Dorsey, RVA4Peace
I responded to this point above right before seeing your latest explanation, but you inspired a thought:
Ratzinger has spoken eloquently about the atrocities of Nazi Fascism, but has been almost completely silent in the face of today's Neocon Fascism and of course he was silent at the time of the Nazi Fascism when it was active then too. This, along with the preemptive way in which he was placed on the throne, er, Papal seat, has led me to believe he's nothing less than a Fascist Installation doing his part to pacify the world.
That said, he, himself was the one to clear Williams' "re-communication" and that seemed entirely inconsistent, UNLESS, and it's just my way of imagining the stealthy way in which high-powered strategists might think, he has begun a kamikaze-like stealth program to 1) first start associating himself with holocaust-denial combined with 911truth, then, 2) Do something dastardly beyond human reason and be part of an international effort to discredit both, falling from grace, and saving the Fascists ship from widespread/respected exposure.
I personally hope instead, that he recognizes the Fascism under the banner of 9/11 and the GWOT and wants stealthily to start leaking the truth to the masses, but there's always a new possibility for new-and-improved brainwashing too.

I can only suppose it was the location and the label itself that threw the bishop off... his statement was not antisemitism.
Antisemitism is the hatred of the Jewish people, and NOT the questioning of the numbers of people killed during the Holocaust.
But it is indicative of the forced equation of the two that Israel has created over the past decades.
However many, whether it be 6 million or 6 hundred thousand, and however they died, be it in gas chambers or by starvation, it really doesn't matter. That is indeed a holocaust. But for a person to simply talk about scientific studies that have been conducted, valid or not, and literally fear being put in jail for doing only that, there is something drastically wrong with the logic that creates that situation in the first place.
The truth does not need stormtroopers to quell it's dissenters.
That is the question of academics, combining "the specific contribution of Jewish individuals to the Nazi Hierarchy"... I'm not sure if there is any other academic inquiry involved, and I open myself to inquiry on this. But the thesis that inquiry would limit itself to whether there was mass-murder seems beyond the scope. There may however be analysis of "enabling" and "execution" of any raw data available, or any testimony to the contrary even though we have much, and it is that data which we assume together has validity in forming a permanent foundation for Holocaust Truth.
If academic inquiry is unlawful, then can we, any of us, know it? This was Ahmadinejad's academic and your warning willyloman:

It is a well known fact that during World War II the Germans murdered millions of non-jews as well as jews, most of whom were Roman Catholic. In fact many priests and nuns were also killed by the Germans. This was especially so in Poland, Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. As well they also targeted Gypsies (Roma) What I am curious to know is whether Father Williamson denies this as well.
Also does Father Williamson deny the murders of millions of people in the killing fields of Cambodia, the genocides done against the native people of central America and finally the very recent holocausts in 1994 in Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
The way I see it, to deny one is to deny all. To reinstate such a person is quite simply an abomination against God himself.

I don't think you know whether Wiliamson denied anything, or whether he "questioned the official narrative", including the details involving on-the-ground deaths of innocent people. Williamson, along with many other academics, "questioned" whether the numbers were "real" and/or whether there was complicity by members of the Jewish society or any other sects within Germany at the time of mass murders, which no one is denying. "Questioning" factual data and "denying" reality are two different issues, yes? Or is it the normal position that "questioning" narrative, data, and/or history are some kind of "heresy"?

back in High School in St. Louis (Florissant/ Pasadena Hills neighborhoods) because I was on a swimming team and didn't want to quit when my mother moved to Illinois (she was a case worker for the Dept. of Public Aid and had to move for a promotion back on that side of the River. We moved to St. Louis from E. St. Louis previously. I moved a lot as a kid). A fellow swim team member (the two of us went on to be co-captains) of mine by the name of Evanowski offered to let me stay with his family if I wanted to and since I was beginning my Junior year, everyone agreed it'd be better not to finish my last two years in a different school. My Polish "family" were not Jews, they were Slavs and you could tell if you ever met one. They were as big boned and wide as Arnold ever thought about being. And they were devout Catholics (don't worry, it didn't rub off). They had five strapping sons, so I was hardly noticed on the food bill and they had a food bill! (their mom kept a padlock on the refrigerator. The old man Evanowski was a brooding, quiet, immensely powerful guy that just went to his job, came home and went to church, but occasionally he would have a beer and we'd sit at the supper table and talk about things. Over the course of two years, I heard a lot of stories including his time in WWII as a dogface in the Philippine Island chains and the insane dedication the Japanese had in their bonzai charges. I know he killed many men in his time, but I didn't figure that out until later in my life when people would ask me the same questions and I had the same look. In other words, he didn't embellish things, but you get the idea...
Mr. Evanowski grew up in a village (that I've forgot) in Poland and sensed the war drums beating in Europe, so relatives ponied up money for him and his new wife to immigrate to the U.S. to start a new life. This was in December, 1938 (talk about good intuition!). And what did he do upon arriving but immediately join up the Army to go back! Uncle Sam must have thought it a better idea and sent him to the Pacific Theatre instead (you gotta hand it to him for loving this new country he found:). The point to this drawn out yarn is that Mr.Evanowski had other stories to tell of that time and that's of the death camps. A good many of his (and his wife's) family were killed in the first weeks of the Blitzkrieg, but some survived. And they were witnesses. His oldest son (who was two years older than me and his swim team brother) had a fucking library on what went on in his father's homeland of Poland in the basement. From floor to ceiling in rows barely able to navigate through were tomes of all things Polish, half of which were printed in that language. And I remember the boxes, full of photographs. I saw the yellowed post marked airmail envelopes the pictures and letters came in. The uncles and other relatives of his that fought the Nazi's were partisans and some joined up with the Red Army when they finally pushed through and these photos don't lie. The Holocaust happened...yes, it did. As I said, the Evanowski's are not Jewish, and even if they were, I've seen the photographs (hundreds of them in all sizes, from many different type cameras) and I'm not talking no Time/Life bullshit pictures you see in a book. I even remember what the boxes of photographs smelled like because I was young and wondered if I could smell death on them (but didn't).
For what it's worth, I think it's petty at this point to quibble on the head count or even if it happened. I think Kazio's past influenced my joining up and I'll just say I used my swim team experience to good measure.
Even though I personally am not an Iraq holocaust Survivor I still want to know the details of the savagery suffered by them, I want to know more than the BushNazi's are telling me. Academics study everything, whether tiny worms in the brains of monkeys or chemical leaches from extinct plant life, you name it and there's an academic studying it, turning over every stone. That's the point of Holocaust research, the term "holocaust" itself is researched, rejected by theologically-correct Jewish scholars who are offended by the term's Greek-pagan roots. Some research may indeed be motivated by suspicion or mistrust of Jewish people, just like those researching lobotomy on human subjects may be motivated by closet-butcher, but regardless, the virtue of research is that it doesn't gain acceptance by prejudice or motivation, but by peer reviewed reproducibility. The facts are established when they can't be denied by any other facts.
What we have in this debate is the hyper-politicizing of Nazi Holocaust research as off-limits and anti-semetic, unless it's the research into recovery of stolen wealth. No one in the world is allowed to research this issue because there are those afraid their story could be challenged, their tightly-held narrative might have to be modified. Do you know for a fact 6 million Jews were murdered, is it more, less, does it include the Poles, Soviets and Homosexuals? Likewise, why is it politically correct to study the King James Bible but not question it's authenticity?
I don't deny a Jewish holocaust took place in Nazi Germany, but that holocaust wasn't only against Jews, and it wasn't the only holocaust or genocide that academics are studying. Studying a subject, however motivated, is not the same as denying it, quite the opposite. Look at Norman Finkelstein's interview with PressTV last week, a Jewish holocaust survivor bravely declaring Israel's treatment of their Palestinian neighbors as a holocaust. He's a researcher made famous on his work exposing the hyper-influence of AIPAC and is now banned from returning to Israel, the nation universally viewed as a safe-harbor for people like him.
On the subject of your Polish family friends, what a tragic story. So sad that any family would be motivated for any reason to saturate their lives with the details and consequences of mass treachery. One of my first intellectual mentors, and probably my highest-esteemed, was a Jewish-Polish intellectual named Leopold Tyrmand. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopold_Tyrmand He was exiled from communist Poland for helping lead the resistance to the ideas that propped it up. Freedom of Press, Freedom of Speech and Expression, Freedom of Religion, and Freedom of Academic Inquiry.
Research on these subjects is supposed to teach the rest of us to be on our guard against any person or institution that would perpetrate any kind of holocaust on any group of people. We must not be afraid to stare into the details ourselves and we must not ban others from researching and fleshing them out. Our defense of this kind of freedom is the cornerstone of western values and doesn't only apply to people who think like us.
I hope the above clarifies where I come from in the above posts.

as any one with an inquisitive mind would :) With one thousand sets of eyes, there will be one thousand sets of truths. I merely thought I'd give you one set. I have nothing at all against furthering the truth, no matter how painful, but there are those that refuse to believe that this didn't happen and I still remember if the stories got too close to that subject, Mrs. Evanowski would grow pale and silent and quietly go to her room. The matter of what ratio of Jew to homosexual to convict matters not a whit, the fact is that there was purpose built extermination camps and I have held the photographs in my hands. What's more, even if this fellow totally denies the Holocaust, Final Solution or whatever you'd like to call it, that doesn't mean he's wrong ALL the time! Who is? I'm sure Ivan the Terrible had a lucid thought or two (but don't expect me to quote any :) Not meaning to be flippant.
