As a Mom of a special needs young man, I know malicious from unintentional . Unfortunately, both can be insensitive, so in the case of bullies (the malicious ones) they need to be handled on a case by case basis, and punished accordingly with reprimand, suspension, harrassment charges, etc. In the case of these off the cuff remarks made by people like President Obama, all of society needs to be sensitized to this . I would simply give President Obama and his staff diversity training in disablities, not a slap on the face ;-)

Off the cuff, yea maybe. When a very popular President makes an off the cuff joke on national TV about Special Olympians, it has meaning. Obama has been living diversity so there is no excuse. Not that I think it should be blown out of proportion because there are a lot more important things to think about.
Not to public knowledge anyways. As much as it pains us to see our children harmed in any way, we parents usually know what a person's remarks mean or don't mean. I would imagine in his setting of President where disability laws are concerned , he would be one of the first ones to advocate for the disabled. If there is ever a problem in his professional arena regarding the disabled, believe me, you will hear from us loud & clear!
Motive and intention are primary factors, and Obama was just trying to make a self-depreciating joke, unfortunately it fell like a lead ballon, and yes, it is being blown out of proportion. How many times must the man publicly apologize for a slip of the tongue?

Obama has been living diversity not disability. As a parent I do know that when a very popular president says something-it has meaning. The up side of this is he will feel over-obliged to make good, which means the Special Olympics and the disabled will hopefully reap some benefits. Apologies are overrated.

“These words in some respect, can be seen as humiliating or a put-down to people with special needs,” Shriver said. “This language needs to be a teachable moment, I think, for our country.”
On the return trip to Washington last night, deputy press secretary Bill Burton told reporters that the remark “was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics. He thinks that the Special Olympics are a wonderful program that gives an opportunity to shine to people with disabilities from around the world.”
Shriver, the son of Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver, said Obama told him that “he was ready to have some of our athletes over to the White House to bowl or to play basketball, or help him improve his score.”
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is a Special Olympics coach and whose wife is Maria Shriver, Timothy Shriver’s sister, defended Obama today outside the White House.
“I know where his heart is at,” Schwarzenegger said after a meeting with the president. “He will do everything he can to help Special Olympics. And every one of us sometimes makes a mistake by something comes out of your mouth and you say: ‘Oops. I wish I hadn’t said that.’”

Like I said, hopefully this will make him go above and beyond to make up for his "Oops". Photo-ops at the WH with the Special Olympians will mean nothing if he doesn't truly understand his popularity.
Compared to seeing my son experience victimization by bullies from preK through 12th grade, this "oops" flies miles below the radar . I have even forgiven repentant bullies in the past. I guess teaching my son, 'don't sweat the small stuff' comes with the territory ;-D

Yes you're right, I tell my family member with special needs not to sweat the small stuff either. Being in a setting with other people like him helps. Being called names by someone in the neighborhood is one thing, being called out on national tv by a popular president is quite another. There is a chance that the bully could feel "the president did it, why can't I". That is the risk you take when you speak before you think. Just a thought.
There are more important things he could be doing besides going on tv with Leno, no? We do have some serious issues to be dealt with. I am not giving him a free pass, NEVER did I give the last one a free pass, not going to change for this one. I am becomming more and more confident everyday that they are all the same, no matter what letter they have behind their name.
In regards to the joke, he does have an opportunity to turn it into good. Put your apology to work. These people need a lot of assistance especially when it comes to the Special Olympics. Maybe he could do a video for The Special Olympics. Yankee, can you imagine the money it could raise for them. I haven't seen any other politician do it lately, have you?
There are more important things he could be doing besides going on tv with Leno, maybe. However reaching out to the American people is one of those important things, and Leno does seem to have a wider audience than dwindling corporate media these days. So maybe the venues for reaching out is part of the "change".

But Obama's remark was neither planned nor against the disabled, it was intended to be a self-depreciating joke, but he , at worst, made a social faux pas instead. Clearly President Obama apologized profusely. This is no "free pass" on my part, I am just acknowledging the true nature of a minor incident which is being blown out of proportion for political reasons, no? If the actual motive behind the political reasons is to raise money for Special Olympics, then, yes, I am all for it!

AIG paid its bribe to Obama and Dodd and now AIG gets their kickback. They looted our treasury. Their embezzlement is proven on its face. To divert your attention they used an unconstitutional tax gimmick that any idiot would know can never be enforced.

You think it was self-depreciating, I think it was from someone that does not think before he speaks, and needs constant reinforcement for his huge ego. Someone with so much nuance should have more common sense. As for AIG well we can all see where that has gone. Bailouts, bonuses, campaign contributions. Same guy different letter.
Venting may be healthy for you, but you really have no solutions , do you? Like I have taught my son "sticks and stones..."
