David:
It is the battles you know you will lose that are the most important that you fight.
For they lay the foundation for future action.
I may have disagreed with much of what you advocated, but this is the vital lesson I took away from this event.
And it should serve as inspiration for all who struggle for peace.
But what is peace?
As we discussed afterward, we may have varing definitions of what constitutes "peace", as we focus on secondary issues.
But surely, if we define it narrowly, we can work on the aspects upon which we agree.
Can all of us, liberals, conservatives and those of us that don't fit under those two unbrellas agree that step one in the pursuit of "peace", however we may define it comprehensively, is the immediate withdrawl of our military forces from foreign lands?
And even if we don't "succeed"; even if, for example, the Afghan war plays out to it's inevitable end, are we not obliged to make the effort?
You left me, at least, with no reasonable doubt.
And as you were driven away...we each raised our hands to each other in the traditonal symbol of peace...
We may not live to see it, but if mankind thrives, we will prevail.
Peace, Brother

Step one is "withdraw the troops?"
While every normal person is for peace, withdrawing troops in no way guarantees peace, let alone peace with justice.
Time for a REALITY CHECK.
If everyone puts their favorite "step one" on a card, I suspect those cards together would arrange nicely as a circle, rather than a hierarchy. This what the Left loves to do, bless us. Declare and discuss. And maybe hold a sign up for a few hours every so often.
As long as partisans keep declaring and discussing their "step ones," the real source of all power for millenia, MONIED ELITES WHO PROMULGATE ROGUE CORPORATISM, will have their way with us.
It's time to match monied elites with equivalent resources for the People. Only then will this battle for democracy and freedom can be engaged seriously. Until then, we will be on the outside looking in. Until then, our aimless card-sorting will remain good recreational activity. Only when the financial resources of the elite are matched with similar resources on behalf of the People will we be able to get beyond dreaming of enacting those "first steps."
