As a believer in "personal responsibility" I feel that Bush and Cheney shouldn't do the crime (i.. treason) unless they are willing to "do the time."
What are the chances that Conyers' resolutions get a public airing, let alone a vote on the floor? The Republicans have a monopoly on federal government now and simply won't allow it. Read more at my blog, http://www.daveralis.com/dailyrant/2005/12/censure-bush-try-impeachment....
How many cosponsors are needeed?
Thank you.

Bills can be, and frequently are, passed with no cosponsors. Also, I can think of one that has 159 cosponsors (cf. http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h109-550) that hasn't had any committee movement.
It's about time the Democratic Party decided to get some backbone and demand answers to our increasing questions. I was really starting to wonder if anything was going to get done, and hold this administration accountable for their actions. I strongly support an investigation and eventual impeachment of Bush and Cheney, for they have over-stepped their boundaries way too many times.
From what I'm seeing and hearing one additional area the Democrats need to improve is their TEAM EFFORT. I am not advocating the sick, stick together even thru lies and corruption like I'm seeing on the Republican side. I would like to see them more closely knit in their policies without losing individuality.

Bush and Cheney have lied, yes, lied to the American public so many times it's ridiculous that we haven't done anything.
Chock it up to slanted corporate media coverage and crooked Republican leadership. Gee, could there be any connection there?
In Europe, people take to the streets. In America, we wait for someone to do something.
Hey, folks, this is it. You are the one!!! Do something. Don't expect any TV or Newspaper coverage either.
Still, look what Cindy Sheehan was able to start on her own.
love, happy holidays!!!

Censure, investigation, and initiation of impeachment proceedings are long overdue against this imperial presidency which seemingly knows no bounds of constitutionality.
I hope that we are not wasting our time as I do not feel that enough Republicans will support an impeachment try and without support from the Republicans any try at impeachment will fail.
We need to try though because this administration is bankrupting our country and destroying the social programs which have made our country great.
Already this administration has added more debt than all the previous administrations combined. Why is this fact not being pointed out.
As admirable and necessary as this is, this is not the time to call for impeachment, but this is the time to gather information, and investigate. IF the democrats are a popular choice in the coming 2006 elections, we THEN have a chance to call for impeachment. Until then, all our efforts are dead in the water and we have wasted time and resources to accomplish a pipe dream! Republicans have the majority!! They just ain't tipping over their dictatorous leader!!
Yes, write your congressmen and women and call for an investigation into activities of Bush and Cheney for possible impeachment. But, please do not urge them to impeach just yet....we must have the proper ammunition to make the accusation stick and the impeachment process a slam dunk! If the Republicans can impeach a president for oral sex, I hope there is still enough justice left to impeach the current sitting administration for lies, more lies, election manipulation, and sending over 2000 of our youth to their deaths in an illegal war! Not to mention forcing our youth having to undergo and be exposed to continual harrassment by Army, Navy, Marine, etc. recruiter's con jobs because if they aren't allowed to do this the government can take away education funds. Or giving Homeland security carte blanche to override our civil liberties, or the president illegally spying on everyone who might innocently mention keywords associated with terrorists in their telephone conversations, emails, etc. We have to take back our America, our rights, and get rid of the resident trash in the White House.
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little
temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin
Thank you SO much for saying this. My thoughts exactly. We probably will actually have a chance of impeachment after the 2006 elections, but I just don't see it happening before then. I know people are frustrated and angry and feel the need to take action -- it just needs to be a reasoned approach.
While I think it's time to have the way our government operates needs correction, it is probably true that this Congress would not be able to impeach Bush and Cheney.
But of this, I am certain: America must wake up to the fact that it is the legislative body, House and Senate, that enacts the laws by which this nation is run.Too many eligible voters do not vote, or are not aware of the basic principles of government.
With more than 25 million veterans, plus their families and relatives eligible to vote, the balme lies therin.
Undobtedly there is a conspiracy in Washington, with co-conspirators in every city and town, who are responsible for what is happening. The co -conspirators are the stay-at-home voters.
Don't be misled by seeing members of Congress who intrioduce bills- many do this as a ploy to fool voters. They know fully that their "bills' will never pass.

There is something terribly wrong with our Constitution that needs to be addressed! Thanks to the Republican majority the country can be held as legal hostages until the current administration's term expires?! This is so WRONG!!! Think about all that has happened so far. Worse yet, think of how much worse it's likely to get. Meanwhile there is nothing we can do? There are no provisions in our Constitution to prevent what amounts to a dictatorship? All we can do is 'hope and pray' more balance will be won with the 2006 elections? As we wait, more and more innocent lives are lost. So I'm being told all Republicans are going to stick together, right or wrong, just idly watching as things grow worse with each passing day. I'm going to send a copy of this to my Republican Senator and Representative. I have never voted straight ticket, but if that's what it's going to take to derail this mess, I hope everyone will do just that.

A bit more info for you:
635: "Creating a select committee to investigate the Administration's intent to go to war before congressional authorization, manipulation of pre-war intelligence, encouraging and countenancing torture, retaliating against critics, and to make recommendations regarding grounds for possible impeachment"
636: "Censuring President George W. Bush for failing to respond to requests for information concerning allegations that he and others in his Administration misled Congress and the American people regarding the decision to go to war in Iraq, misstated and manipulated intelligence information regarding the justification for the war, countenanced torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of persons in Iraq, and permitted inappropriate retaliation against critics of his Administration, for failing to adequately account for specific misstatements he made regarding the war, and for failing to comply with Executive Order 12958."
637: "Censuring Vice President Richard B. Cheney for failing to respond to requests for information concerning allegations that he and others in the Administration misled Congress and the American people regarding the decision to go to war in Iraq, misstated and manipulated intelligence information regarding the justification for the war, countenanced torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of persons in Iraq, and permitted inappropriate retaliation against critics of the Administration and for failing to adequately account for specific misstatements he made regarding the war."
And now let's see it out in the media! NYT, CNN, where are you? Though, to really get the point home, I think having Katie Couric on Good Morning America mention this would be the best holiday present ever!
Let's see the talking heads in the corporate media claim it's not an issue now!
Ask them to cosponsor these House Resolutions. Click on my name to keep up with the latest impeachment news (via Yahoo!).
I am saddened by the fact that "dictator" Bush has stayed in power this long. Under Bush the US is not a democracy but a hypocracy and the number one terrorist country in the world. Bush and his mafia cronies should be tried for terrorist acts, murder, theft and for forging both presidential elections (which they did not win)! What a disgrace and international tragedy this entire administration has brought to the world.
Since Jan. 2001 my days have been full of sorrow, anger, and frustration, with occasional HOPE. Sorrow for the end of democracy in my beloved nation, anger directed towards Democrats who refused, again and again, to stand up and demand HONESTY, recounts, justice---not just for the party, but mostly for American citizens. The Black Congressional Caucus has brought HOPE into my emotional life, along with Democracy for America, The Pregressive Democratic Party, MoveOn, Democracy, com, the ACLU, PEN and other evolving progressive groups. and individuals, such as Senator Barbara Boxer, who stood with Rep. John Conyers protesting acceptance of the Electoral College decision of 2005. In fairness to traditional Democrats and ordinary citizens, victims of fraud and crookedness in public life, it must be stated that the neo-conservatives are well trained in propaganda and mind control methods. They worked for decades to develop their imperialistic ideology and train their "troops," without detection. They are an amoral group of powerful people joined by hundreds of "little" people willing to cheat to win, disenfranchising voters through harrassment, fraudulent lists, manipulation of voting machine tallies, laundering tainted money, and more, much more. Large numbers of Blacks were kept from the polls in FL and elsewhere in 2000 and Bush was appointed President by 5 members of the Supreme Court who refused to honor the US Constitution's directive that states control elections. We never got a count of all the votes in 2000. Then in 2004 Diebold and friends, promising to deliver Ohio to Bush, owned and controlled voting machines and software, easily manipulated from a distance. I was watching Peter Jennings' reporting on Kerry's growing lead in Ohio, matching exit poll data, when suddenly it reversed itself. Jennings was "taken aback," and I was horrified. Mark Crispin Miller had warned us before the 2004 election. Then he povided extensive evidence after Kerry conceded, in FOOLED AGAIN. My sorrow and anger grew deeper. Now I watch Alito spin to try to manipulate people into believing he is not a right wing ideologue. I have to remain hopeful that the Democrats will hang together and be joined by one Republican so Alito can be rejected by the Committee. The Democrats are doing a great job and, hopefully, people will be able to spot Alito's lies. " Hope springs eternal in the human breast."
We share the same expressions, down to the very descriptions. Certainly there must be more who feel this way. Don't forget to add dumsfeld. I won't capitalize their names any longer, as I hold no respect for the band of thugs who have brought such disgrace to this once glorious nation. When he is talking on the news I get so upset I quickly hit the mute on my remote. I can't even look at any of them. Lies... nothing but lies!
No one even questioned TWO close elections?! This person isn't even the rightful president! Corruption and lies got him elected twice?! The New York Times sits on a story they knew would change the outcome of the election. We can't trust the media. Technology wizards can block the phone lines, ballot machines can be tampered with. Proof and more proof, yet nothing was done?!
So this is what can happen in a one party majority? Am I alone in thinking this should never happen again? It leaves the doors wide open to the formation of a dictatorship. I'm not so naive to think that corruption is only black and white... it's not just a Republican phenomenon. Excessive powers throughout history have lead to corruption and greed. It seems "history repeats itself" is mere cliché. Nothing is truly learned unless there is meaningful change.
It amazes me that spying on Americans without a legal warrant is what finally got everyone so angry. One would think the ineptness of this so-called administration and the Endless River of Blood and Sorrow would be enough. If the American people don't reclaim this country we will always be seen by the world as the true terrorists. A successful uprising against a corrupt government who lulled us into wrongdoing would be easier for them to forgive. Allowing this to go on sends the wrong message- that we in fact agree with the slaughter of the innocent, torture, secret prisons, holding "enemy combatants" without any proof of guilt or innocence. Our country will never be free if we stand idly by, allowing tyranny to control us.

As I a Canadian near the border, I am so happy to hear stirrings from the progressives in Congress and at the grassroots. I so want America to become once again a nation that I am proud to claim as a neighbour. To impeach a president for lying about sex or for committing petty burglary and not to do so for waging a war based on lies is difficult for the rest of world to understand.
Rick from Ontario, Canada
Our nation's image has suffered greatly under this administration and this is not just my opinion. It comes from what I read. Thanks to the wonderful world of the web I can read online news from all over the world. But then again, I'm trusting the news much less these days.
What they did to President Clinton was ridiculous. The so-called "moral majority" somehow thinks adultery is worse than the endless list of crimes going on today?! What happened was between Bill and Hillary. If they can mend their marriage, I think the rest of those wagging their fingers should have stayed the hell out of it. Going to war based on lies in my opinion amounts to mass murder. Compare that with having an affair?!!!!!
***And if the NSA is reading this blog I'd be happy to repeat this in person! LOL!
If I wasn't disabled I'd be considering a move to Canada, taking my little family with me. That seems to be where many of our good jobs have gone and socialized medicine is looking better everyday. The job my SIL has now pays HALF of what the same job paid 25 yrs ago. The future for young people today is so grim. When I make my phone bill payment by calling it in... customer service is now in Canada.

Bush deserves a fair trial and so does Cheney.
You , sir, can no longer hide
Of this I am sure. IF we ever got an investigation and trial for Bush, Cheney and the rest of the gangsters who have seized this country, they would, in fact, be treated to more fairly than those being held in Guantanamo, Abu Grahib, and those victims of THIS administration's "extraordinary renditions"
Would that be a "fair trial" as in this administration's definition or in the traditional sense? The sad truth is IF they go to trial, it would be amazing if they were held accountable for a fraction of their wrongdoing. Afterward, there would be pardons and forget about any real justice.
In my opinion war crimes and crimes against humanity should also be addressed, but I very much doubt this will ever happen. In my mind this is one of the more obvious reasons for objection by the Bush administration against the International Criminal Court.
"You, sir, can no longer hide"... meaning what?

We have evicted a president from office for committing a burglary at Watergate and President Clinton was almost run from office for his part in the act of two consenting adults engaging in sex but now we have to force the action to get the powers-that-be to thoroughly investigate the current occupant of the White House about his untruths to the American people that have resulted in the deaths of young Americans. In the minds of practically all the people I know lies about going to war, etc, is far more serious than the crimes committed by the two presidents above.
I believe that the present administration has determined to undermine many former laws that make this country and its residents free. It has allowed more money to come in the hands of the rich and avoided helping working-class people by allowing companies to stop providing pensions and by outsourcing. Now, we know that the CIA and possibly the FBI has the freedom(given them by the President--Not Congress or the Senate) to listen to our telephone calls, to have access to our e-mail activity. The President feels he has the power to go to war with a country whether the Congress and Senate approve or not.
We the people are powerless.
Hello all,
I am speaking as a Canadian citizen (who has lived and worked in the US in the past). In our times I have been frustrated by the similarities between what is going on in the US at highest levels of government, and the timeless book "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. In that book, one of the animals (a pig named Napolean) rewrites constitutional rules and propagates fear to accomplish his own agenda.
What saddens me most, however, is not that a single individual like George Bush can engage in these activities (this has happened many times before in history) , but that the population seemingly sits back and seems either powerless or apathetic to the situation. That the government can issue doublespeak to its citizens with seeming arrogance and impunity. It's as though no-one truly cares if they are lied to, or if fear-mongering is accepted to justify arrogant behavior. Must history repeat itself ? Is the US becoming a nation of pacified media-consumers who watch wars as though they were video games ? The controversy over wiretapping is encouraging, but why does it take that specific issue to get people talking ? Is not the torturing or the bloodshed of tens of thousands of people enough ? Having lived and worked in the US before, I know Americans as friendly, moral, just, decent, and a whole host of attributes that we know and value as part of our collective humanity. At what point do we assert that humanity ? Is there something I'm missing ?
Another thought: We 've all heard about warnings of WMD, and discussions on whether Bush misled the people. This may be true. I think, however, many people have danced around one basic issue regarding Iraq. One that Bush's behavior has come to symbolize, and one that may be incompatible with fundamental human values. That is: Is it sufficient to attack someone because we suspect that one day he may attack us ? Is it alright in the first place, for me to go beat up a neighbour I think MAY have his eye on something in my home ? The assumption there has been that if indeed Hussein did have WMD, attacking would be justified. I think what lies under that rationale is fear, simply put. Fear that sometimes overrides higher human values. As a Christian, the values I believe in don't seem to be compatible with that. Why not attack England ? North Korea ? France ? China ? India ? These are all countries that possess WMD. We've seen that friends of yesterday (e.g. Hussein's Iraq) can become our enemies of tomorrow, and we've seen enemies of yesterday become friends (e.g. England, Japan). Who then, should be attacked ? World politics is complicated, yes, But is it so convoluted that we can ignore our basic values, values that we would be willing to pass on to our own sons and daughters ? We become our values. We can expound on our values when its easy and convenient, but where we act contrary to them when it's expedient, our children inherit a diminished future.
Sincerely,
A Canadian citizen
