Enough of his excuses: Blair must be impeached over Iraq

By Michael Rose, The Guardian

The only way parliament can regain the trust of disaffected voters is to admit that it was wrong to support the war

Wars are won when the people, government and army work together for a common cause in which they genuinely believe. Whereas the people may be initially uncertain about military intervention, politicians will often be the strongest advocates - blinded by the imperatives of their political views. It will invariably be military commanders who are most cautious about using force - for they understand better than most the consequences of engaging in war.

Bush believes he is above the law

By Theodore Fuller, Roanoke Times (Virginia)

Fuller is a professor of sociology at Virginia Tech.

Most of us who are old enough to remember Watergate remember that the key lesson from that crisis was that, in the United States, no one -- not even the president of the United States -- is above the law. President Bush's willful decision to approve spying on U.S. citizens without a court order indicates that he has forgotten that crucial lesson.

What We Don't Know Can Hurt Us

By Dave Lindorff

There is an bill in Congress to investigate Bush for impeachable crimes. Did you know that? If not, maybe you should be asking your local media outlets why you don’t know about it.

San Diego Cheers Filner

By Barbara Cummings, San Diego

We had a great turnout today, thanks in large part to Kelly King and Judy Hess. They even provided a sack lunch. I would guesstimate 200. Bob Filner got 3 standing o's, the loudest and longest when he mentioned impeachment!

The NYT's Unconscionable Decision to Sit on the NSA Story for a Year

By LAWRENCE R. VELVEL

The one year delay in The New York Times' revelation of the warrantless electronic eavesdropping remains inexplicable. The Times' ombudsman, Byron Calame, wrote last Sunday that the high Times officials involved -- Bill Keller and Arthur Sulzberger -- refused to give any adequate explanation or to answer his questions. It did seem to Calame, however, that in effect they were claiming that to explain would be to give the government leads it could use to track down (and punish) the whistleblowers, the people whom one other writer, Jonathan Alter, believes are the true patriots here because they exposed serious governmental wrongdoing.

President Nixon famously said that if the President does it, it's legal. And he didn't think that up on his own – that's a way of thinking that has long had currency in America.

"Got Impeachment?" w/poll

By Stirling Newberry, DailyKos

People here know that I have written on impeachment, both the historical and political reasons for it. People may know that if there were a compass that points at legitimacy, it would point straight at me. Legitimacy is the issue that Democracies must face. Without the faith by an overwhelming segment of the population in the integrity and legitimacy of the government, there is no government. The Declaration of Independence declares that legitimacy is the issue that Americans set their division from the mother country on.

By Nick Mottern, coordinator, www.ConsumersforPeace.org

The manager of the Radisson Lexington Hotel in midtown Manhattan was agitated as he ushered us out of the hotel’s lobby on December 30. It was understandable because two colleagues and I were wearing signs that said: “Boycott ExxonMobil/Radisson – U.S. Out of Iraq/Impeach Bush - ConsumersforPeace.org.

Ever since the 2003 primary season, the notion of political blogs conducting or commissioning their own telephone polls has flickered to the surface every now and then. A few months ago, Impeach PAC became the first blog to actually go through with it, raising enough money to commission Zogby to run a poll on impeachment.

Energy is growing at the state and national level to impeach as the White House spy scandal provokes more press scrutiny of Bush's foreign and domestic policies. This against a backdrop of increasing anti-Iraq war sentiment and polls showing a majority of Americans would support an investigation into whether or not the President has committed impeachable offenses.

Time to impeach a President

By DOUG THOMPSON, Capitol Hill Blue

I’ve always felt impeachment is the nuclear option of politics; a drastic action we call in after all else fails. That’s why I’ve been reluctant to call for the impeachment of President George W. Bush.
