Sheeler attempts to impeach Bush

By NICOLE WIETRAK, Coventry Courier

PROVIDENCE - At a state house press conference Wednesday, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate and West Greenwich resident Carl Sheeler made a call out to Rhode Island Congressmen James R. Langevin (D-02) and Patrick J. Kennedy (D-01) to assist U.S. Representative John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) to initiate impeachment hearings for President George W. Bush.

Audio: Rep. Maxine Waters Says Bush's Spying Program Is an Impeachable Offense

Here's a short audio clip from the Alternative State of the Union event hosted by the Progressive Caucus, the Nation Magazine, and the Institute for Policy Studies. The only voice you'll hear will be that of Congresswoman Maxine Waters, speaking about Bush, and saying:

"His message tonight will not deal honestly with the mistakes that he's made. And I believe that the latest revelations about him and his spying on American citizens - no matter how he tries to frame it - are impeachable offenses. I believe that this president is not only spying on American citizens in the way that he's describing it, but to indicate in any shape form or fashion that he's been authorized by Congress to do it on the vote that was taken after 9-11 is plain dishonest. And further to try to imply that he's supported by the Constitution of the United States is even more dishonest. And so, I think that this issue that he's been caught red-handed on is really typical of who he is, how he handles this presidency, and what his leadership is all about: spying and lying. And I think it is important for us to understand that all of the other issues that we're going to talk about today - and particularly the war in Iraq - will continue to exemplify how he has lied and misled the American public."

Impeachment = Turnout?

By Steve Cobble, www.huffingtonpost.com

Those of us who co-founded AfterDowningStreet.org have long pushed for some sort of "accountability" for the Bush Administration's lies about the war--from hearings to censure to impeachment. Legally and morally, George W. betrayed his oath of office; he has earned impeachment.

Lies About Blowjobs, Bad. Wars? Not So Much.

At a recent conference on the Clinton Administration at Hofstra University, ex-press secretary Jake Siewart made a point that had previously eluded me: It was during the early days of Clinton's presidency that the democratization of instant information made the insider press corps obsolete. To retain their importance and self-regard, these journalists had to invent a new function for themselves, and they did: interpreting, not reporting, the news. But instead of doing the hard work of researching the historical, economic, sociological and political contexts of a given story and then finding a way to explain these in lay terms, they preferred to rely on what came most easily to them: cocktail party gossip, green room small talk, semiofficial leaks and unconfirmed rumor, almost always offered up as if the source had no interest in pushing a point of view.

Impeachment. The "I word." We've been over that ground more than once here. And there's been something of an evolution in my thinking on the subject, and probably yours, too.

The ‘I’ word

By San Diego City Beat

In last week’s San Francisco Bay Guardian, the Bay Area’s venerable, rabblerousing alternative weekly, Steven T. Jones reported that “in the wake of the revelation that federal officials have been illegally eavesdropping on American citizens without required warrants—which President George W. Bush not only admitted approving, but promised to continue under his expansive view of executive power—has propelled talk of impeachment into the political mainstream.

The impeachment issue

By San Francisco Bay Guardian

Our article last week on the case for impeachment struck a nerve. It's been picked up all over the blogosphere, cited on some of the key anti-Bush sites like AfterDowningStreet.org and ImpeachPAC.org, and, based on the responses we've been getting, circulated widely by e-mail. That should come as no surprise: Although elected leaders in Washington are still afraid of the I word, out in the rest of the country it's very much in the political vernacular.

W Places Apple On Head, Dares Nation To Shoot it Off

By Tom Gilroy, www.huffingtonpost.com

If you missed the President's address to the nation last night, here's all you really need to know: he dared us to impeach him.

W basically got up there and said, 'I'm the same incompetent buffoon I was 6 years ago, and I'm staying the course. What're you gonna do about it?' He stared the country down and dared us to acknowledge the miles-long list of crimes and failures trailing behind him like a swatch of toilet paper stuck to the heel of an Alzheimer's patient shuffling out of a public restroom.

Time for Citizens to Insist Bush Obey the Law

By Kevin Zeese

Yesterday, I moderated an excellent forum on the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney. The event featured Cindy Sheehan, well known peace activist, Ramsey Clark, the former Attorney General for President Johnson, Ann Wright a 29 year veteran of the Army and 16 years in the foreign service (quit to protest the Iraq War), David Swanson, founder of Impeach PAC and AfterDowningStreet.org, Marcus Raskin founder of the Institute for Policy Studies (who was prosecuted by co-panelist Clark during the Vietnam War era!).

Cindy Sheehan: “Bush’s Presidency Is Illegitimate!

Washington, D.C. - Cindy Sheehan is back in town! I’m sure that big bully in the White House, President George W. Bush, will be shaking in his cowboy boots when he hears that news. When Sheehan, the popular anti-Iraq War activist, showed up at Crawford, Texas, last summer, Bush refused to meet with her. He seemed cowed by her mere presence at a vigil (a/k/a “Camp Casey

Being a National Activist

By David Swanson

Remarks prepared for California Democratic Party Progressive Caucus meeting in Los Angeles, Jan. 28, 2006

I was asked to speak about "Creating National Action as an Individual," so here are a few thoughts. Back in May, five of us individuals brought a bunch of groups together as a coalition called "After Downing Street" www.afterdowningstreet.org We used the internet and radio and lots of activism to force the Downing Street Minutes into the news. Our success came from tapping into passion among a large section of the public for exposing the war lies and pushing the idea of impeachment.

Sample Resolution for a State or Territory to Ask the House of Representatives to Impeach

Drafted by Richard Matthews

WHEREAS, United States House of Representatives rules allow for setting a federal impeachment in motion by charges transmitted from the legislature of a State or territory; and

George Bush and Cheney have committed high crimes including treason

THE INTERNATIONAL FORECASTER editor Bob Chapman writes: Mssrs. Bush and Cheney have committed the following high crimes including treason:

1. Mssrs. Bush and Cheney lied to Congress and the American people in order to invade Iraq. Thousands of American servicemen and mercenaries have died in this military action against Iraq. Many times that amount of innocent foreigners have died as well. By needlessly casting the US in the role of an aggressor nation, which has already caused the death of thousands of innocent US military personnel, Mssrs. Bush and Cheney have committed treason. This demonstrates that they are nothing more than war criminals like Hitler and Stalin.

Only 7.0 percent said they were not likely to vote for such a candidate.

Impeach or Indict Bush and Cheney

By Ronnie Dugger, Texas Democracy Foundation, http://www.texasobserver.org

The year 2006 will be historic for the nation, and probably for humanity. Texans Bush and Rove and their conspirators in the second Bush presidency have disgraced American democracy at home and in the world with debasements of our nation and our values that have now entered their climactic phase. What part will the rest of us Texans play in this decisive year?
