Need to Oppose Afghan Troop Increases
by Arn Specter, Phila (Twitter and Op Ed News )
If we make a concerted effort to voice opposition to the call for more
troops in Afghanistan, alert our friends and associates, notify the Media,
alert the Public, etc. then we have a chance to prevent further escalation
of the war and all that it would entail. Let us stand up against those in Think Tanks who choose to escalate war to promote their own agenda, and special interests.
Now there are many people - even within the military- who oppose further troops in Afghan, and want us to wind down the war and bring our troops home. The Afghan government is seen as corrupt, the people very poor and mistreated, and many addicted on heroin with millions of dollars generated from the many crops cultivated-still- in that country. Much of this money goes to support the Taliban (and al-Qaeda). Things are very strange in that country and in this 8 yers war situation. Too, it is a wonder that after all this time we haven't even come close to capturing the leader of al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden. Why? The U.S. Military is proported (and funded!) to be better equipped , by far, than any other fighting force in the world. All we have to do is look at the pictures of our troops dressed in full combat gear, armed with a heavy-duty assault weapon, to get the sense they are rather invincible against the enemy. Why then, haven't we won this war after 8 long years? Since the military is not offering the American Public, nor is NATO, with 42 Nations represented, saying much about the failure there (except recent talk from some countries about pulling their troops out) then we are either being misled abut our real chances of success there or they desire to fight on, no matter what and support the Military Industrial Complex, which supports and supplies this and every war at the high cost to the American taxpayer and citizen.
This article by Rebecca Griffin, Peace Action West, brings us up to date on the current dialogue, and the "battle' between the President and the Generals...
Let us take a look and remain vigilent in our protests against further war making and more pecemaking through diplomacy, negotiations and agreement making.
