Iraq War Protest Legacy to Arab Spring to Occupy

Film-in-progress traces Iraq War protest legacy

"We Are Many" shows how mobilization in 2003 set stage for Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street

Dec 8, 2011 - On Feb. 15, 2003, the planet experienced the greatest single non-military mobilization of humanity in the history of the world. People in 800 cities (and Antarctica) marched to voice their opposition as George Bush’s countdown clock ticked away the days toward the threatened U.S. invasion of Iraq. Estimates of the total numbers of protesters vary widely but it seems plausible that 15 million took to the streets.

Michael Moore defends Tony Bennett on 9/11 and US terrorism

From Stop The War Coalition

"Who are the terrorists? Are we the terrorists? Or are they the terrorists?" said Tony Bennett, when asked about 9/11. Just as with the Dixie Chicks, Michael Moore, Bill Maher, and others before him, this triggered an avalanche of bigotted hatred in the right-wing media and on the Internet, including death threats. Filmmaker Michael Moore faced the same barrage of bile after his Oscar acceptance speech. In this video Moore defends his and Tony Bennett's right to voice an opinion on 9/11.

Like Michael Moore, Tony Bennett has always opposed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has been a lifelong supporter of progressive causes. In the 1960s, he marched shoulder to shoulder with Martin Luther King in the fight for black civil rights. He is pictured here with Martin Luther King and the singer and civil rights' activist Harry Belafonte.

Praxis

A thinkerI've admired David Swanson for a number of years. He's one of the most active progressive activists I know — indeed, both astonishingly productive and absolutely on message. Since he gets out and about all the time, and I don't, it was a real treat to hear his sense of where things stand politically, and his advice regarding what people should be doing. (Think getting arrested.) Thanks, David!! Total runtime thirty six minutes. Āctum est dē rēpūblicā.
