I’m sick of the nattering nabobs of news nuance who populate the conservative controlled media. On and on they blusterate about whether or not Iraq is experiencing a civil war. Who cares! It’s a war and people are dying - both Iraqi and American, both civilian and soldier - and let’s not forget the forlorn souls of the Coalition of the Willing.

The entire Civil War vs. war vs. occupation vs. whatever gives me a pain in the tookus. It’s bad enough that infotainment journalists engage in endless blatheration and bomboosttheirratings, but why are so many people who should know better wasting their time and energy. Don’t they see the magic trick?

Culture jamming is the act of transforming existing mass media to produce negative commentary about itself, using the original medium's communication method. It is a form of public activism which is generally in opposition to commercialism, and the vectors of corporate image. The aim of culture jamming is to create a contrast between corporate image and the realities of the corporation. This is done symbolically, with the "detournement" of pop iconography.

A year ago, an NBC News investigation revealed the existence of a secret Pentagon database that included information on antiwar protests and American peace activists.

Now, newly disclosed documents reveal new details on who was targeted and which other government agencies may have helped monitor Americans. At universities across the country, an antiwar group called Veterans for Peace has staged protests by setting up crosses for soldiers killed in Iraq. In New Mexico last year, the local paper described the event as a display of honor.

Samizdat (Russian: самиздат, Polish: Bibuła or drugi obieg) was the clandestine copying and distribution of government-suppressed literature or other media in Soviet-bloc countries. Copies were made a few at a time, and those who received a copy would be expected to make more copies. This was often done by handwriting or typing. This grassroots practice to evade officially imposed censorship was fraught with danger as harsh punishments were meted out to people caught possessing or copying censored materials.

A Teach-in is a method of non violent protest, first employed against the U.S. government's involvement in Vietnam. The idea was inspired by a Professor Marshall Sahlins who taught anthropology at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. The idea was to allow a forum for opposition towards the war. Students and faculty would meet at night in university facilities to argue, ask questions, challenge assumptions and learn about the Vietnam war.

Raasta roko means "obstruct the road" in Hindi. It is a form of protest quite commonly practised in India. It usually involves a fairly large number of people preventing vehicular traffic from using a generally busy thoroughfare. Pedestrian traffic is not significantly affected.

Sit-in

A sit-in or sit-down is a form of direct action that involves one or more persons nonviolently occupying an area for protest, often political, social, or economic change. Sit-ins were first employed by Mahatma Gandhi in Indian independence movement and were later expanded on by Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and others during the American Civil Rights Movement. In the 1960s students used this method of protest during the student movements such as the protests in Germany.The Young Lords in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, used it successfully a full week, to win community demands for low income housing investment, at the Mckormick Theological Seminary. In a sit-in, protesters usually seat themselves and remain seated until they are evicted, usually by force, or until their requests have been met. Sit-ins have been a highly successful form of protest because they cause disruption that draws attention to the protest and by proxy the protesters' cause. The forced removal of protesters and sometimes the answer of non-violence with violence often arouses sympathy from the public, increasing the chances of the demonstrators reaching their goal. Sit-ins usually occur indoors at businesses or government offices but they have also occurred in plazas, parks, and even streets.
