Why Quitting the Democratic Party Makes Sense

Since I posted my call two days ago for registered Democrats to re-register as independent voters (and to sign the petition here which will be sent to Democratic Party leaders when it's big enough to make an impression), I have received some complaints from progressive Democrats that it risks handing the 2008 election to the Republicans.

“Shooting prisoners is a game that two could play at.”

Ten dead men were picked up of the 92d, after the Nickojack slaughter, besides several who were mortally wounded. One sergeant who was with Lieutenant Scoville, while riding at the top of his horse’s speed right towards the rebel trap, had his horse shot and he fell full length in the middle of the road, throwing the rider head-over-heels rolling and tumbling into the corner of the fence by the roadside. The rebels were right at his heels riding as fast as their horses could carry them. Notwithstanding his bruises and hurts, the sergeant lay motionless. The whole rebel force rode within three feet of him and passed on. As soon as the last rebel got past he jumped up and cut across the fields to the timber and got away. He was the only man with Scoville who did escape.

HAPPY CONSTITUTION DAY from After Downing Street Coalition

Redact 2
Unfortunately, there's not much left of it after Unitary Executive Bush and President of the Senate Cheney got through with it. By this time next year all that should be left is the parchment it used to be written on.

It's a damn shame that so many, including the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, are doing so little to safeguard something they swore a sacred oath to "support and defend from all enemies foreign and domestic".

Congress rushes to protect the Grand Ol' Flag everytime somebody tries to exercise their free speech, but from the glacial inaction evident in both chambers of the U.S. Capitol and all around the country, George Bush must be right. The Constitution is "just a damn piece of paper."

Oaths of Office ignored by most City Councils

OpEdNews

Here and there around the country debates are raging over whether or not to open City Council meetings with The Pledge of Allegiance. This discussion is the very definition of the political "red herring". Nothing could be less critical or more distracting from the real issues of priority facing our nation.

Send This One to Your Congress Critters: The War as We Saw It

VIEWED from Iraq at the tail end of a 15-month deployment, the political debate in Washington is indeed surreal. Counterinsurgency is, by definition, a competition between insurgents and counterinsurgents for the control and support of a population. To believe that Americans, with an occupying force that long ago outlived its reluctant welcome, can win over a recalcitrant local population and win this counterinsurgency is far-fetched. As responsible infantrymen and noncommissioned officers with the 82nd Airborne Division soon heading back home, we are skeptical of recent press coverage portraying the conflict as increasingly manageable and feel it has neglected the mounting civil, political and social unrest we see every day. (Obviously, these are our personal views and should not be seen as official within our chain of command.)

Real Counter Recruiting

Prince William Fair 2
Dan,

I thought you would appreciate some pictures from the PWC (Prince William County, VA) Fair. VFP 16 shared a booth with the Prince William County Peacemakers. The fair lasted 8 days and we may have recruited up to 20 people. We'll see. But I wanted to let you know I started to put your posters to work. Steve Hayes and I will be starting some mobile recruiting soon. He has his truck rigged up for exactly that purpose. This guy is coming to D.C. next week so we may be helping him as well.

MY WAR, MY STORY

Documentary Trailer: We traveled across the U.S. to make this documentary. Our motive was simple - we felt that an important story about the war was not being told. These vets who oppose the very war they fought in were not making sweeping statements or generalizing. Their ideas developed after seeing and hearing specific things in Iraq. Where can you hear stories like this? We weren't exposed to anything like these stories on the major media. There was broad support for the war, on the one hand, or stories of big scandals on the other, but nothing like this, the quiet opinions of many ordinary vets. These are stories that need to! be heard.

The Myths of World War II
by Sean Gonsalves

Back in April, the Library of Congress Veterans History Project and the Public Broadcasting Service announced a collaborative initiative to collect war stories, which will include Ken Burns’ new film, The War, slated to air on September 23.

Given Burns’ masterful look back on the two best cultural gifts America has ever given the world — jazz and baseball — I’m looking forward to his soon-to-be-released documentary.

But when I checked the Veterans History Project home page, I got a little worried when I read: “Throughout 2007, PBS stations all over the country will be initiating outreach programs designed to raise awareness of World War II and the need for its veterans and civilian workers to tell their stories for the record.”

Raise awareness of World War II? How could anyone in America who hasn’t been in a coma since Tom Brokaw coined the term “Greatest Generation” not be aware of World War II?

Road construction on Lyndale Ave. inadvertently reveals the truth about being a veteran in America. You're a second class citizen. You're underpaid and uncared for. Veterans ask Senator Warner to support and defend the Constitution

August 7, 2007

Honorable John Warner,

We are Virginians and Veterans of the United States military who have taken oaths to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. That oath has no expiration date. We present you for the last time detailed information and evidence regarding; the failed state of Iraq, the degradation of the U.S. military, its troops, its veterans and its families, and the case for the impeachment of the Vice President and President of the United States. This is our final SOS. Save our nation now! For the sake of Virginia and the nation we appeal to your honor and your oath of office to support and defend the Constitution. This is our distress call.

Senator Warner will you stop the war now, get all troops and contractors home, close all permanent bases, and pursue the impeachment of George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney? For the support of this statement we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.

TRENDS IN FOIBLES AND FOLLIES

Date: 10 August 2007

BUSH IS AN IDIOT: From the very beginning of the 2000 campaign season people fell for the “Bush is an Idiot” canard. It was promulgated everywhere and especially in the Main Stream Media. Events have shown how foolish it was to underestimate Bush. Rampant and repeated Bushisms diverted attention from what was really happening. Bush and his supporters were more than happy for their opponents to be laughing at Bush. There was gaity even in defeat.

Give your name (to Kucinich) or let them (Bush & Cheney) take it down
